Chapter 12: The Third Signature
Nobody spoke.
The paper remained in Jordan’s hand.
A single signature.
A single name.
A secret that had been waiting years to be discovered.
Jordan looked at his father.
“Dad.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That scared him.
“Who is it?””
Marcus looked away.
Elliot stepped closer.
“Jordan.””
“No.””
Jordan held up the paper.
“I want to hear it.””
His voice was shaking.
“But I want the truth.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You deserve that.””
Jordan looked down again.
The name was there.
Clear.
Impossible.
“Why?””
The question came out as a whisper.
Vanessa looked at the document.
Then at Jordan.
“I never knew.””
Jordan looked at her.
“You didn’t?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
For once, Jordan believed her.
Marcus finally spoke.
“The signature belongs to someone who had access to the family.””
Jordan stared.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation made Jordan angry.
“Dad.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“It was your grandfather.””
Jordan froze.
“My grandfather?””
His mother’s father.
A man Jordan barely remembered.
“He signed it?””
Marcus nodded.
“Before he passed.””
Jordan looked confused.
“Why?””
Elliot answered.
“Because your grandfather knew something was coming.””
“What?””
Elliot looked at Vanessa.
Then Marcus.
“He knew someone would eventually challenge the trust.””
Jordan looked at the documents.
“So why did everyone hide this?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Because after your grandfather died, the document was supposed to be sealed.””
“And?””
Marcus took a breath.
“And someone reopened it.””
Jordan felt the familiar anger return.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then David quietly spoke.
“I think I know.””
Everyone turned.
David stepped forward.
“I saw a copy.””
Marcus looked at him.
“When?””
“Before I signed anything.””
Jordan stared.
“You knew about this?””
David shook his head.
“Not the whole thing.””
“What did you see?””
David looked at the documents.
“A request for access.””
Marcus frowned.
“From who?””
David hesitated.
Then said:
“Brielle.””
The room went silent.
Jordan turned slowly.
“No.””
Brielle immediately shook her head.
“No, Jordan.””
Everyone looked at her.
She started crying.
“I didn’t know what it was.””
Jordan stared.
“What do you mean?””
Brielle stepped forward.
“Mom told me to sign something.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“Brielle.””
“I thought it was paperwork.””
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
“You used her?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I never wanted her involved.””
“But you involved her.””
Brielle wiped her tears.
“I thought I was helping.””
Jordan shook his head.
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an explanation.
And Jordan was still the one paying the price.
Marcus looked at Brielle.
“What exactly did you sign?””
Brielle hesitated.
“A request.””
“For what?””
She looked down.
“To review the trust.””
Jordan froze.
“A review?””
David nodded.
“That’s how it starts.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“No.””
His voice changed.
Everyone looked at him.
“This wasn’t about the money.””
Jordan stared.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus picked up the emergency amendment.
“The withdrawals were a distraction.””
Vanessa went pale.
Jordan’s heart started racing.
“From what?””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“From changing who controlled the trust.””
Silence.
Elliot slowly nodded.
“That’s why the money moved.””
Jordan understood.
The money wasn’t the target.
It was the beginning.
Someone wanted him distracted.
Angry.
Focused on the wrong betrayal.
Marcus looked around the room.
“Whoever did this knew exactly how we would react.””
Jordan looked at the people around him.
Vanessa.
Brielle.
David.
Elliot.
His family.
His secrets.
Then his phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone turned.
Jordan looked down.
Unknown number.
One message.
His fingers trembled as he opened it.
The message contained only one sentence.
*Stop looking for the truth, or you’ll find out why your mother really died.*
Jordan’s face went pale.
Marcus grabbed the phone.

And for the first time that night, Jordan saw his father completely lose control.
Because Marcus knew who sent it.
