Chapter 8: The Trust Nobody Mentioned
The word inheritance stayed in Jordan’s mind.
It didn’t feel real.
He wasn’t someone who had inherited anything.
He was just Jordan.
A fourteen-year-old who worried about school, basketball practice, and whether his dad would be home before dinner.
He didn’t understand why adults were talking about trusts and documents like his entire life was a business deal.
“What inheritance?””
His voice was quiet.
Nobody answered immediately.
That made it worse.
Marcus walked away from the group and placed both hands on the kitchen counter.
Jordan followed him.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked exhausted.
“I should have told you.””
Jordan swallowed.
“Told me what?””
Marcus looked toward the windows.
“When your mother passed away, she left plans for your future.””
Jordan waited.
“Not just money.””
Marcus turned.
“She left protection.””
Jordan frowned.
“Protection from who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Jordan looked at Vanessa.
Then David.
Then the phone.
Everyone had been protecting something.
But nobody had protected him from the truth.
“I want to know everything.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Jordan stepped closer.
“I mean everything.””
His voice became stronger.
“I’m tired of people making decisions for me because they think I’m too young.””
Nobody argued.
Marcus looked at his son.
And finally nodded.
“You’re right.””
The words surprised Jordan.
His father continued.
“Your mother created a trust before she died.””
Jordan sat down slowly.
“She knew something was wrong?””
“No.””
Marcus hesitated.
“She knew people change when money is involved.””
David looked down.
Jordan noticed.
“You knew my mother?””
David nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
David looked uncomfortable.
“We worked together.””
Vanessa immediately looked at him.
That reaction was too quick.
Jordan noticed.
“You worked with my mother?””
David nodded.
“For years.””
“Then why did you help Vanessa?””
David looked ashamed.
“Because I believed her story.””
“What story?””
David took a breath.
“She told me Marcus was hiding information from you.””
Jordan looked at his father.
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
David continued.
“She said you were planning to control the trust yourself.””
Jordan stared.
“That’s not true.””
“I know that now.””
Marcus looked furious.
“You signed documents based on a lie.””
“Yes.””
“And you never checked with me?””
David lowered his eyes.
“No.””
The honesty made the room colder.
Marcus turned away.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“I never meant for it to go this far.””
Jordan looked at her.
“Then what did you mean?””
She struggled to answer.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She looked at him.
“Your future.””
Jordan shook his head.
“You don’t get to destroy something and call it fixing.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
For once, she looked like she understood.
Marcus picked up the folder.
“Where is the original trust agreement?””
David answered quietly.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“I only saw copies.””
Jordan’s heart sank.
“Someone has the original?””
David nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Before David could answer, Vanessa suddenly stood.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was shaking.
“I know where it is.””
The room became silent.
Marcus stared.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked at Jordan.
And Jordan saw something in her expression.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I kept it.””
Marcus froze.
“You kept the original?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I couldn’t destroy it.””
Jordan stared.
“Then why hide it?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because if you saw it, you would know why your mother never trusted certain people.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at Jordan.
“The trust named a person.””
Jordan felt cold.
“What person?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Marcus demanded:
“Who did your mother name?””
Vanessa slowly walked toward the cabinet near the wall.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
From inside, she removed a small locked box.
Jordan stared.
The box looked old.
Like it had been hidden for years.
Vanessa placed it on the table.
“This is everything.””
Marcus looked at the lock.
“Where’s the key?””
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Jordan noticed.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I don’t have it.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“I had it yesterday.””
David looked confused.
“Yesterday?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Someone took it.””
The room went silent.
Jordan looked at the locked box.
The answers were inches away.
But someone had already reached them first.
Then Marcus noticed something on the table.
A small white card.
Nobody had seen it before.
He picked it up.
His face changed.
“What?””
Jordan moved closer.
May you like
Marcus read the message aloud.
And the name written at the bottom made everyone freeze.
