Chapter 13: The Truth My Father Buried
Marcus stared at the phone.
The message remained on the screen.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Nobody dared speak.
Jordan watched his father’s face change.
Not anger.
Not confusion.
Pain.
The kind of pain that came from recognizing something you prayed you would never see again.
“Dad?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Jordan stepped closer.
“Who sent it?””
Marcus locked the phone.
“Jordan.””
“No.””
His voice became firmer.
“I’m done waiting outside the truth.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at his son.
And for a moment, Jordan saw something he had never seen before.
A father who didn’t know how to protect his child anymore.
“I need to tell you something.””
Jordan nodded.
“Finally.””
The word hurt.
Marcus accepted it.
“You’re right.””
He placed the phone on the table.
“I kept something from you.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
Elliot watched carefully.
Jordan’s heart sank.
“What?””
Marcus took a slow breath.
“The night your mother died…”
He stopped.
The room changed.
Everyone knew that sentence mattered.
Jordan had grown up with one version of that night.
A car accident.
Bad weather.
A tragedy nobody could control.
But now he wondered.
Was that even true?
Marcus continued.
“Your mother wasn’t only worried about the trust.””
Jordan waited.
“She was worried someone was following the money.””
Jordan frowned.
“What money?””
“The money connected to her family’s business.””
Jordan shook his head.
“I thought Mom just left us the trust.””
“She did.””
Marcus nodded.
“But she also discovered something.””
“What?””
Marcus looked at Elliot.
Then Vanessa.
Then back at Jordan.
“Someone inside the family was moving money.””
Jordan felt cold.
“Who?””
Marcus looked down.
“We never proved it.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice cracked.
“It isn’t.””
He looked at the documents.
“Your mother was investigating.””
Jordan swallowed.
“And she died before she finished.””
Nobody moved.
Elliot spoke quietly.
“She left clues.””
Marcus nodded.
“She did.””
Jordan looked at the letter.
“The trust?””
“And more.””
Marcus opened the box again.
Under the documents was a small envelope Jordan hadn’t noticed.
His name wasn’t on this one.
It had only one word.
“Evidence.””
Jordan stared.
“Mom kept evidence?””
“Yes.””
Marcus picked it up.
“She knew someone might try to erase the truth.””
The room became tense.
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails.
Bank records.
Photographs.
And one document with a familiar logo.
Jordan looked closer.
“What is that?””
Marcus’s expression darkened.
“It’s from your mother’s company.””
Elliot stepped forward.
“I knew it.””
Jordan looked at him.
“You knew?””
Elliot looked guilty.
“I suspected.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“You never told me?””
“Because I didn’t have proof.””
Jordan looked between them.
“Everyone always has a reason.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew he was right.
Marcus continued reading.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
Jordan moved closer.
Marcus handed him the paper.
Jordan read the heading.
*Unauthorized Account Activity Report.*
Below it were dates.
Names.
Transfers.
His eyes widened.
The transfers matched.
The same pattern.
The same money trail.
The same people.
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Jordan looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
For once, she sounded afraid instead of defensive.
Marcus flipped another page.
Then froze.
“What?””
Elliot looked over his shoulder.
His face drained.
Jordan noticed.
“What is it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He turned the paper around.
At the bottom was a signature.
A signature approving the suspicious transactions.
Jordan looked.
And his entire body went still.
Because the signature belonged to someone who was supposed to protect him.
Someone everyone trusted.
His grandfather.
“No.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Jordan looked confused.
“Grandpa?””
Elliot shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus stared at the signature.
“It isn’t his.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus pointed.
“The signature is copied.””
Jordan’s heartbeat increased.
“So someone forged it?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Elliot looked at the documents.
“Then someone wanted it to look like your grandfather approved everything.””
Jordan whispered:
“Why?””
Marcus looked at the evidence.
“Because your grandfather was already dead.””
The room went silent.
Someone had used a dead man’s name.
Someone had planned this carefully.
Someone who understood the family.
Someone who knew every weakness.
Then Jordan’s phone vibrated again.
Another message.
This time, no threat.
Only a photo.
Jordan opened it.
His face changed.
It was a picture of his mother.
Taken the night she died.
May you like
And behind her was someone standing in the shadows.
Someone Jordan recognized.
