Chapter 10: The Man Who Walked Away

The voice outside the door changed the entire room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed normally.

Jordan stood beside his father, staring at the handle.

The person on the other side knew exactly who was inside.

They knew Marcus.

They knew about the box.

And somehow, they knew enough to come back at the exact moment everything was falling apart.

Another knock.

“Marcus.””

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Is that him?””

She nodded slowly.

Jordan felt his stomach tighten.

“Uncle Elliot?””

Nobody corrected him.

That was all the confirmation he needed.

Marcus stepped in front of Jordan.

A protective movement.

Automatic.

But Jordan noticed something else.

His father wasn’t just protecting him.

He was preparing.

“Stay behind me,” Marcus said quietly.

Jordan frowned.

“I’m not a little kid.””

“I know.””

Marcus looked at him.

“But you’re still my son.””

The words almost broke Jordan.

Because after everything, that was the one thing that had never changed.

Marcus opened the door.

Standing outside was a Black man in his early fifties.

He wore a dark coat, his face serious but tired.

He looked older than the pictures Jordan remembered from childhood.

Elliot Carter.

Jordan’s uncle.

The man who disappeared.

The man nobody wanted to talk about.

Elliot looked past Marcus.

His eyes landed on Jordan.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“Jordan.””

Jordan didn’t respond.

Elliot looked hurt.

But Jordan didn’t care.

“You know my name.””

Elliot nodded.

“I’ve always known your name.””

“Then why did you leave?””

The question came out before Jordan could stop it.

The room went silent.

Elliot looked down.

“That’s complicated.””

Jordan laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You don’t get to walk in here and act like nothing happened.””

Elliot looked at him.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Marcus’s voice hardened.

“You disappeared after my wife died.””

Elliot closed his eyes briefly.

“And you think that was easy?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I think you made a choice.””

Elliot didn’t argue.

That made Jordan curious.

Because people who were innocent usually defended themselves.

Elliot looked at the box on the table.

“I see you found it.””

Vanessa immediately stepped between him and the table.

“Don’t.””

Elliot looked at her.

“You hid it.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I protected it.””

“No.””

Elliot’s voice became colder.

“You protected yourself.””

Jordan watched the two of them.

There was history here.

A lot of it.

Marcus noticed too.

“What happened between you two?””

Nobody answered.

Jordan looked at his father.

“You knew something.””

Marcus sighed.

“I knew there were problems.””

“What problems?””

Marcus looked at Elliot.

Then away.

“Your mother didn’t trust him near the end.””

Jordan froze.

“My mom didn’t trust Uncle Elliot?””

Elliot’s expression changed.

“That’s not true.””

Marcus looked at him.

“She changed the trust documents.””

Elliot shook his head.

“She changed them because she was afraid.””

“Of you?””

“No.””

Elliot stepped into the apartment.

Marcus didn’t stop him.

“Of everyone.””

He looked at Jordan.

“Your mother knew people would come after what she left you.””

Jordan stared.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Elliot’s eyes softened.

“Because she wanted you to have a childhood.””

The answer hurt.

Because Jordan realized his mother had been trying to protect him too.

But protection had become another word for secrets.

Elliot looked at the locked box.

“The key isn’t missing.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa went pale.

“What?””

Elliot reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small object.

A key.

Jordan stared.

“You have it?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Why?””

Elliot looked at Vanessa.

“Because she gave it to me.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

Marcus’s voice shook.

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

“That’s not true.””

Elliot looked at her.

“Tell them.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Jordan looked at her.

“You gave him the key?””

She looked ashamed.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“Of what was inside.””

Marcus looked furious.

“What is inside that box?””

Elliot walked toward the table.

“The truth.””

He placed the key down.

Nobody touched it.

Then Elliot said:

“Your mother left one final instruction.””

Jordan’s heart started racing.

“What instruction?””

Elliot looked at him.

“She said the box should only be opened when Jordan discovered the first betrayal.””

Jordan felt cold.

“The first?””

Elliot nodded.

“Because there were two.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Two?””

Elliot looked at Vanessa.

“You were the first person.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“And the second?””

Elliot looked at Marcus.

Nobody moved.

Jordan felt the room collapse.

His father?

Impossible.

“No.””

Elliot looked at him.

“I’m not saying your father betrayed you.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Elliot picked up the key.

“I’m saying your mother knew someone would try to make you doubt him.””

He looked at Marcus.

“She left something in this box for the day Jordan questioned who was protecting him.””

Marcus stared.

Jordan looked between them.

The truth was sitting inches away.

But opening it felt terrifying.

Elliot inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Everyone froze.

The box opened slowly.

Inside was a stack of documents.

And one handwritten letter.

With Jordan’s name on the front.
