Chapter 7: The Call From the Past
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
David stood in the middle of the living room staring at the screen like it was a ghost from another life.
Jordan watched his father’s reaction.
That was what scared him.
Not the phone.
Not the unknown caller.
Marcus looked terrified.
Jordan had seen his father angry.
He had seen him frustrated.
He had even seen him exhausted after long days at work.
But fear?
Never.
“Dad,” Jordan whispered.
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Dad, who is it?””
The ringing stopped.
The silence afterward felt worse.
David slowly lowered the phone.
Vanessa immediately looked away.
Jordan noticed.
She knew.
Again.
Everyone knew except him.
Marcus finally spoke.
“Call them back.””
David looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
Marcus took a breath.
“But I need answers.””
David stared at the phone for a moment.
Then pressed the button.
The call connected.
Everyone became completely still.
“Hello?””
Nobody answered.
Jordan could hear faint breathing through the speaker.
Then a voice.
A voice that made his entire body freeze.
“David?””
Jordan’s eyes widened.
He knew that voice.
Not well.
But enough.
Marcus looked at him.
He knew Jordan recognized it.
The voice continued.
“Why are you calling me?””
David swallowed.
“Because they know.””
A pause.
Then the voice became tense.
“Who?””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Me.””
The line went silent.
The person on the other end stopped breathing for a moment.
Then:
“Marcus.””
Jordan felt the room tilt.
He knew that name.
He knew that voice.
But he didn’t understand why.
Marcus grabbed the phone.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
“Answer me.””
The voice sighed.
“I knew this day would come.””
Jordan looked at his father.
“What is happening?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
The person on the phone finally spoke.
“Jordan is there, isn’t he?””
Jordan’s stomach dropped.
The fact that the caller knew his name made everything worse.
Marcus tightened his grip.
“You don’t get to say his name.””
“Marcus, listen—”
“No.””
His voice shook with anger.
“You stayed silent.””
The caller didn’t deny it.
That hurt more.
Jordan stepped closer.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked at him.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
The person on the line spoke again.
“Jordan deserves the truth.””
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
The panic in her voice was obvious.
“No. Not from him.””
Jordan stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s face fell.
Because she had no answer.
Marcus looked back at the phone.
“Tell him.””
The caller stayed quiet.
Then said:
“Your father isn’t the only person who protected you.””
Jordan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Like he already knew.
The caller continued.
“Jordan, your education account was never just money.””
David looked down.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What did you do?””
The caller answered:
“I tried to make sure Jordan would always have something that belonged to him.””
Jordan shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
Nobody did.
Or maybe they did.
And they were afraid to explain.
Marcus handed the phone back to David.
“Put it on speaker.””
David hesitated.
Then did it.
The entire room could hear.
The caller spoke slowly.
“Jordan, there are things your father never told you.””
Marcus immediately interrupted.
“Because they were private.””
“Because you were scared.””
Jordan looked at his father.
That sentence hurt.
Marcus didn’t respond.
The caller continued.
“When your mother died—”
The room went silent.
Jordan stopped breathing.
Nobody talked about his mother.
Not like this.
Not suddenly.
Not now.
“When your mother died,” the caller repeated, “she left instructions.””
Jordan felt his heart pound.
“My mother?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Marcus looked away.
The caller continued.
“She knew there would be problems.””
Jordan stared at the phone.
“What problems?””
A pause.
Then:
“People who wanted what she left behind.””
Jordan’s eyes narrowed.
“What did she leave?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Marcus quietly said:
“Your mother left you something.””
Jordan looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked broken.
“A trust.””
The word hung in the air.
Jordan shook his head.
“Why didn’t I know?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
The caller answered for him.
“Because someone changed the documents.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
Jordan felt sick.
“You?””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was trying to protect the family.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time, she didn’t fight back.
The caller spoke again.
“Jordan, the money in that account was only one part.””
Jordan stared at the phone.
“What’s the other part?””
The line became quiet.
Then the caller said:
“The person who changed the documents wasn’t trying to steal your education fund.””
Jordan waited.
“They were trying to take control of everything your mother left you.””
Marcus looked at the folder.
David looked terrified.
And Vanessa looked like she already knew what was coming.
Then the caller said one final thing:
“The person who helped Vanessa was not doing it for money.””
May you like
A pause.
“They were doing it because they knew Jordan’s real inheritance was worth much more.””
