Chapter 14: The Person Behind the Accident

Jordan couldn’t move.

The photograph shook in his hand.

His mother.

The night she died.

He had never seen this picture before.

Not once.

Her face was visible.

She was standing outside near her car.

She looked worried.

Not scared.

Not yet.

But someone was behind her.

A figure.

A person watching.

Jordan zoomed in.

His fingers trembled.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Jordan handed him the phone.

Marcus looked.

Then his face collapsed.

Elliot stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Jordan looked at his father.

“Dad.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“That’s your grandfather.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus stared at the photo.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“It isn’t.””

Jordan felt confused.

“But Grandpa was dead.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Nobody had an answer.

Until Elliot spoke.

“Because the picture wasn’t taken the night we thought.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Elliot pointed.

“The timestamp.””

Everyone looked.

Jordan checked.

His eyes widened.

The date was wrong.

It was taken months before the accident.

Months before his grandfather died.

Jordan looked at Marcus.

“So what does that mean?””

Marcus stared at the image.

“It means your mother knew something before anyone else did.””

The apartment felt smaller.

Every secret was opening another door.

Jordan sat down.

“I don’t understand.””

Marcus sat beside him.

“Your mother discovered someone was using your grandfather’s identity.””

Jordan looked at the evidence.

“The fake signature.””

“Yes.””

“And she was investigating?””

“Yes.””

“And then she died.””

Marcus nodded.

Jordan looked away.

“So everyone thought she was just unlucky.””

Nobody answered.

That silence was enough.

Jordan looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For the first time, she looked completely broken.

“I thought she was stressed.””

Jordan looked at her.

“You thought?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was angry with her.””

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t trust me.””

Jordan laughed quietly.

“She had a reason.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

Marcus stood.

“We need to find who sent the photo.””

David looked at the phone.

“Could be Elliot.””

Everyone looked at him.

Elliot shook his head.

“I didn’t send it.””

Marcus studied him.

“Can you prove that?””

Elliot looked hurt.

“No.””

The answer was honest.

Jordan noticed something.

Everyone was guilty of something.

But not everyone was guilty of the same thing.

Then Brielle suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

She was staring at the photo.

“Something is wrong.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed.

“Your mother’s necklace.””

Jordan looked closer.

His mother wore a necklace in the picture.

A small silver chain.

“So?””

Brielle shook her head.

“She wore that necklace in the family portrait.””

Jordan frowned.

“Okay.””

“But that portrait was taken after your grandfather died.””

The room went silent.

Marcus took the phone.

He looked closer.

Then his expression changed.

Because Brielle was right.

The photo was impossible.

Jordan’s breathing slowed.

“What does that mean?””

Elliot whispered:

“It means someone edited the picture.””

Everyone stared.

The threat suddenly made sense.

Someone wanted them scared.

Someone wanted them chasing ghosts.

Marcus looked at the phone.

“This isn’t proof.””

“No,” Elliot said.

“It’s bait.””

Jordan looked at him.

“Then why send it?””

Elliot answered:

“To make us think the wrong person is guilty.””

Marcus looked around the room.

And suddenly everyone understood.

The real person behind everything had never needed to hide.

They only needed the family to blame each other.

Jordan looked at the evidence.

The fake signatures.

The stolen money.

The hidden documents.

The threats.

Then he noticed something.

One paper in the envelope was different.

It had been folded separately.

He opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

And slowly, his expression changed.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

Jordan handed over the paper.

At the top was a sentence written by his mother.

*If you found this, then the person who betrayed us is still close.*

Below it was one final line.

A warning.

A name.

And Marcus whispered:

“No…”

May you like

Because the name wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone standing in that room.
