Chapter 2: The Account Nobody Was Supposed to Touch
Marcus Carter had spent twenty years learning how to stay calm.
As a father.
As a husband.
As a man who knew that one angry reaction could destroy something that took years to build.
But when he read the words on the bank statement, that control started slipping.
He stood in the center of the living room holding the pages tightly.
Jordan watched him.
Vanessa watched him.
Brielle watched the floor.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Marcus lifted the statement.
“Jordan’s education account.””
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, please let me explain.””
He looked at her.
“Explain what?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus looked back at the statement.
“These transfers happened over several months.””
Jordan’s eyebrows pulled together.
“Months?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“You knew this was happening the whole time?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I was handling things.””
“Handling things?”” Marcus repeated.
His voice became colder.
“You removed money from an account created specifically for our son.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
Vanessa looked toward Brielle.
That was enough.
Jordan noticed.
“Mom?””
Brielle looked up.
“Jordan…”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“Don’t call me that like everything is normal.””
Brielle swallowed.
“I didn’t know how much she was taking.””
Vanessa immediately turned.
“Brielle.””
The warning in her voice was obvious.
Jordan saw it.
Marcus saw it too.
“Vanessa.””
One word.
But everyone understood the command.
She stopped.
Marcus placed the statement on the table.
“Where did the money go?””
Vanessa’s expression hardened again.
“I told you. Brielle needed help.””
Marcus laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Help.””
“Yes.””
“With Jordan’s school money?””
“She needed support.””
Jordan looked at Brielle.
“What did you buy?””
Brielle looked uncomfortable.
“It wasn’t just—”
“What did you buy?””
“Jordan.””
“No, I want to know.””
His voice trembled.
“You took money from me. I deserve to know why.””
Brielle looked away.
Vanessa answered for her.
“She had expenses.””
“What expenses?””
Nobody answered.
The silence became its own confession.
Marcus picked up the bank statement again.
“I want every transaction explained.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re making this bigger than it is.””
Marcus stared at her.
“My son came home crying because someone stole from him.””
“I didn’t steal.””
“Then why hide it?””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I didn’t hide anything.””
Marcus turned the paper around.
“Then why did I find out from him?””
No answer.
Jordan sat down on the edge of the sofa.
The anger inside him was slowly being replaced by something worse.
Disappointment.
He had spent years believing Vanessa cared about him.
Maybe not like his father did.
But enough.
Enough to protect him.
Enough to put him first sometimes.
Now he wondered if he had been wrong.
Marcus walked toward the window, holding the statement.
“Jordan, go get some water.””
Jordan looked confused.
“What?””
“Please.””
Jordan knew his father was trying to protect him from hearing something.
But he didn’t move.
“I’m staying.””
Marcus looked at him.
After a moment, he nodded.
“Okay.””
The family stood together in that bright apartment, surrounded by expensive furniture and a beautiful view.
And somehow it felt like the ugliest place in the world.
Then Marcus turned the statement over.
His eyes stopped.
Jordan noticed immediately.
“Dad?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
“What?””
Marcus slowly looked at the numbers again.
“There’s something wrong.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus pointed at the page.
“These withdrawals weren’t random.””
Jordan leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus traced a finger along the document.
“Someone knew exactly how to move this money.””
Brielle whispered:
“Mom…”
Vanessa quickly interrupted.
“Marcus, don’t jump to conclusions.””
He looked at her.
“I haven’t.””
A long silence.
Then Marcus picked up another page.
A page Jordan hadn’t seen before.
His expression shifted from anger to disbelief.
“What?””
Jordan stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Marcus stared at the paper.
Then at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you tell me there was another authorization attached to this account?””
Vanessa went completely still.
Jordan looked between them.
“Authorization?””
Marcus turned the page around.
“There’s a second signature required for major withdrawals.””
Jordan frowned.
“Two signatures?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t only about Vanessa.
Someone else had opened the door.
Someone else had helped.
Marcus looked down at the document one more time.
May you like
And then he said something that made Vanessa’s face lose all color.
“I need to know whose name is here.””
