Chapter 1: The Test on the Marble Island
“Tell your father whose this is!””
The words hit the room before the object did.
Nicole Carter’s hand came down hard against the polished marble island, leaving a sharp echo behind. The bright luxury kitchen, usually filled with the smell of Sunday breakfasts and Noah’s laughter, suddenly felt like a courtroom.
A small plastic pregnancy test lay in the center of the counter.
Two pink lines.
Maya Carter stared at it like it was a weapon pointed directly at her chest.
Her fingers tightened around the sleeves of her black top. Her long curls fell forward as she shook her head.
“It’s not mine,” Maya whispered.
Then louder.
“It’s not mine!””
Across the kitchen, Daniel Carter slowly pushed his chair back.
The sound of the wooden legs scraping against the floor made everyone freeze.
Daniel was a man who rarely raised his voice. He didn’t need to. At six feet tall, with a strong athletic build and a calm expression that could turn intimidating in seconds, his silence often said more than anger ever could.
He stood behind his family in his royal-blue suit, one hand resting on the chair.
“What’s going on?”” he asked.
Nicole turned immediately.
She wore an elegant beige dress, perfectly fitted, every detail about her appearance carefully controlled. Even now, during a family explosion, her hair was neat and her makeup untouched.
She pointed at Maya.
“She’s pregnant and lying to us.””
Maya’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Nicole crossed her arms.
“You heard me.””
“No, I didn’t,” Maya said.
“Because that’s insane.””
Daniel stepped closer.
His eyes moved from the test to his daughter.
“Maya?””
“Dad, I swear to you, I don’t know why that’s here.””
Nicole let out a short laugh.
“That’s your explanation?””
Maya looked at her mother.
“What are you talking about?””
Nicole shook her head sadly, pretending disappointment.
“I wanted to believe you would tell the truth.””
The performance was so convincing that for a second, even Maya looked confused.
That was the worst part.
Her mother wasn’t yelling.
She was acting hurt.
Like Maya had betrayed her.
“Mom,” Maya said, her voice cracking, “why would you do this?””
Nicole’s expression changed slightly.
“What did you say?””
“You heard me.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Maya, choose your words carefully.””
“No,” Maya replied.
“I’m choosing them because nobody else is.””
She walked toward the island.
“I didn’t put that there.””
Nicole stepped back.
“Don’t come near me.””
Maya stopped.
The movement was small, but Daniel noticed.
He noticed everything.
The way Nicole avoided eye contact.
The way her fingers kept touching the ring on her left hand.
The way she kept looking at the test instead of looking at Maya.
But before he could say anything, a quiet voice came from the corner.
“Dad?””
Everyone turned.
Noah stood beside the kitchen doorway.
Eight years old.
Gray hoodie.
Small hands gripping the edge of his sleeve.
He looked scared.
“Why are you all yelling?””
Daniel’s face softened.
“Noah, go upstairs.””
The boy didn’t move.
“Dad…”
Something in his voice made Daniel stop.
“What is it?””
Noah looked at Nicole.
Then at the brown shopping bag sitting beside the island.
“I think you should look inside.””
Nicole’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
“Noah,” she said quickly, “that’s private.””
The boy swallowed.
“I know.””
Nicole walked toward him.
“Noah, give me the bag.””
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Nicole froze.
Maya stared at her little brother.
Daniel slowly turned his attention to the shopping bag.
“What’s inside?””
Nicole immediately answered.
“Nothing.””
Too fast.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Nothing?””
She forced a smile.
“Just groceries.””
“Then why is Noah afraid to hand it to me?””
Silence.
The bright kitchen lights reflected off the marble countertop, making everything look too clean for the mess happening inside it.
Daniel reached for the bag.
Nicole grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
It was the first time all night her voice sounded afraid.
He looked down at her hand.
Then back at her face.
“Let go.””
Slowly, she did.
Daniel opened the bag.
Inside were ordinary things.
A receipt.
A folded piece of paper.
A small pharmacy bag.
He pulled out the receipt first.
Noah watched carefully.
Maya held her breath.
Nicole whispered:
“Daniel, don’t.””
But he already looked down.
And the words printed across the receipt changed everything.
*PREGNANCY TEST — $14.99*
Daniel’s expression didn’t move.
But the room did.
Because everyone saw it.
The moment he realized the test on the island hadn’t come from Maya.
It had come from somewhere else.
Someone else.
May you like
Daniel lifted his eyes slowly.
And for the first time that night, Nicole looked terrified.
