The Test That Wasn't Mine / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Secret Daniel Kept

Daniel read the message three times.

Not because he didn’t understand it.

Because he did.

And that was the problem.

He stood in the upstairs hallway, staring at the phone in his hand.

The message from Marcus was still there.

*Ask Daniel why he never told you the truth about Marcus.*

His first instinct was anger.

Then confusion.

Then something much worse.

Fear.

Maya noticed his expression.

“Dad?””

He locked the phone.

“What?””

“You look scared.””

Daniel forced a small smile.

“I’m not.””

Maya shook her head.

“You are.””

He looked at his daughter.

She had grown up enough to see through him.

Maybe everyone had.

Maybe he was the only one pretending.

“I need to handle something.””

Maya stood.

“Is it about Marcus?””

Daniel froze.

She noticed.

“Dad.””

He sighed.

“How much did you hear?””

“Enough.””

Daniel looked away.

“I’m sorry you had to.””

“No.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

The request was simple.

But it carried years of meaning.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

They walked downstairs together.

Nicole was still standing beside the island.

She looked up.

The moment she saw Daniel’s face, she knew something had changed.

“What happened?””

Daniel held up the phone.

“Marcus texted.””

Nicole went pale.

“What did he say?””

Daniel studied her.

“You already know?””

She didn’t answer.

“Maya, go sit with Noah.””

Maya looked between them.

Then she walked away.

Daniel waited.

When they were alone, he turned to Nicole.

“How long have you known?””

“Known what?””

“About Marcus.””

Her silence told him enough.

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Wow.””

Nicole’s eyes filled.

“Daniel…”

“No. I need to understand something.””

He stepped closer.

“Was I the only person who didn’t know?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Nicole looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“You don’t know?””

“He told me he was going to leave his wife.””

The sentence made Daniel stop.

“His wife?””

Nicole looked up.

“Yes.””

Daniel slowly shook his head.

“Marcus is married.””

Nicole didn’t answer.

“You knew?””

“I found out later.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

“After I was already pregnant.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The betrayal kept getting deeper.

“You were involved with a married man.””

“I loved him.””

The moment she said it, she regretted it.

Daniel opened his eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Not an accident.

Not confusion.

Love.

At least, what she believed was love.

“You loved him.””

Nicole cried.

“I don’t know what I felt.””

“But you said it.””

Daniel walked away.

He reached the island and placed both hands on the marble.

The same island where his family had gathered every morning.

Now it held receipts, lies, and evidence.

Then something clicked.

“Why did Marcus text that?””

Nicole wiped her face.

“I don’t know.””

“He said ask you why I never told you the truth about Marcus.””

Nicole looked confused.

“What truth?””

Daniel turned around.

“I was hoping you could tell me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Nicole whispered:

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“You knew something about him?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Yes.””

“What?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Because this was another secret.

One he had buried.

One he thought he was protecting his family from.

Finally, he spoke.

“Three years ago, before I made you my business partner’s wife’s friend…”

Nicole frowned.

“What?””

“Marcus wasn’t supposed to be in our lives.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I caught him stealing from the company.””

Nicole froze.

“What?””

“He was moving money through accounts.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I confronted him.””

Nicole stared.

“And?””

“He begged me not to expose him.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“Because his daughter was sick.””

Nicole’s expression changed.

“You covered for him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought everyone deserved a chance to fix their mistakes.””

Nicole laughed sadly.

“And now?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Now I wonder if I was just protecting a person who never planned to change.””

The room went silent.

Then Nicole whispered:

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You were protecting him.””

Daniel stopped.

Because maybe she was right.

Before he could answer, Maya walked back into the kitchen.

Her face was pale.

“Dad.””

He turned.

“What?””

She held something in her hand.

A small envelope.

“I found this in Mom’s room.””

Nicole immediately stood.

“Maya.””

But Maya ignored her.

She handed it to Daniel.

“It has my name on it.””

Daniel took the envelope.

His eyebrows tightened.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

Not Nicole’s.

Not Maya’s.

Marcus’s.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence was written.

Daniel read it.

And his face changed.

Because the message wasn’t an apology.

It wasn’t an explanation.

May you like

It was a warning.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, Nicole doesn’t know the real reason I came into your family.*
