Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Door

Daniel didn’t move.

For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

Nicole’s words echoed through the kitchen.

*“It was someone you trusted most.””*

The sentence was worse than any confession.

Because Daniel already knew what trust felt like.

He knew what it felt like to shake someone’s hand.

To invite them into his home.

To let them sit at his family’s table.

And now he was being told that person had been there all along.

“Who?”” Daniel asked.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Nicole looked at the floor.

“Daniel…”

“Who?””

She closed her eyes.

“I can’t.””

Maya stepped forward.

“You have to.””

Nicole looked at her daughter.

The shame in her face was almost unbearable.

“I was scared.””

Maya laughed once.

A broken sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She shook her head.

“Mom, Dad was scared. I was scared. Noah was scared. But somehow, you’re the only one who got to hurt everyone.””

Nicole looked like she wanted to respond.

But she couldn’t.

Because Maya was right.

Daniel picked up the ultrasound.

The name on the paper was hidden beneath his thumb.

He didn’t need to see it again.

He already knew there were only a few people in his life who fit the description.

A few people he trusted enough to let close.

His phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Marcus.

*You deserve to know everything. Ask her about the night at the hospital.*

Daniel looked at Nicole.

“You talked to Marcus after I left.””

Nicole didn’t answer.

“That means he knows.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“And he knows who the father is?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Nicole looked toward the window.

“Because he was trying to protect himself.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

He walked to the kitchen counter.

The marble surface reflected his face.

A man who looked exactly the same.

But somehow wasn’t.

“Tell me the truth.””

Nicole swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“Not pieces.””

His eyes met hers.

“Not the version that makes you look less guilty.””

The room went silent.

“The truth.””

Nicole sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“Three years ago, after your surgery, I stayed at the hospital.””

Daniel frowned.

“I remember.””

“You went home.””

“Yes.””

“I stayed because the doctor asked me to sign some paperwork.””

Daniel nodded.

“Okay.””

Nicole looked at him.

“And while I was there…”

She stopped.

Maya watched her mother carefully.

“While you were there what?””

Nicole’s voice became smaller.

“I saw him.””

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She looked up.

And finally said it.

“Marcus.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

A thousand memories collided.

Marcus visiting after the surgery.

Marcus bringing gifts when Noah was sick.

Marcus standing beside him at work.

All of it.

“I don’t understand.””

Nicole cried.

“He was there because his wife was having a procedure too.””

Daniel stared.

“His wife?””

“Yes.””

“Then how did you…”

She looked away.

“I was angry.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That is not an answer.””

“No.””

Nicole wiped her tears.

“It’s not.””

She looked at him.

“It was the worst decision I ever made.””

Maya stepped back.

She looked sick.

“You cheated on Dad the same night he trusted you the most?””

Nicole covered her face.

“I know.””

“No.””

Maya’s voice cracked.

“You don’t know.””

Nicole looked up.

“You don’t know what you did.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because that was the first time Maya had spoken to her mother like that.

And he understood why.

Then Noah appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Nobody noticed him until he spoke.

“Is Mom leaving?””

Everyone froze.

Daniel turned.

“Noah.””

The boy looked terrified.

“I heard.””

Maya immediately walked toward him.

“Noah, you shouldn’t be listening.””

“But I did.””

His eyes filled.

“Is our family broken?””

Daniel knelt.

He pulled Noah into his arms.

For the first time all night, his control disappeared.

“I don’t know.””

Noah cried quietly against his shoulder.

“But I’m here.””

Daniel held him tighter.

“I’m still your dad.””

After a few moments, Maya joined them.

A family standing together in the middle of something that had already destroyed them.

Nicole watched from across the room.

And for the first time, she understood what she had risked.

Not losing Daniel.

Losing everyone.

Later that night, after Noah finally fell asleep, Daniel sat alone at the kitchen island.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Nicole entered slowly.

“I know you hate me.””

Daniel didn’t look up.

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked surprised.

“Then what?””

He stared at the ultrasound.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

That hurt her.

More than anger.

More than shouting.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel nodded.

“I believe you’re sorry.””

“Then…”

“But sorry doesn’t erase choices.””

Nicole lowered her head.

“I know.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel asked:

“Who is the father?””

Nicole froze.

“I told you.””

“No.””

He looked up.

“You told me you met him.””

Her breathing stopped.

“You never told me his name.””

Nicole’s face changed.

And Daniel saw it.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The secret inside the secret.

“Nicole.””

She whispered:

“I can’t.””

Daniel stood.

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you…”

“What?””

Her eyes filled.

“You’ll never forgive me.””

Before Daniel could answer, there was a knock at the front door.

Both turned.

Nobody was expected.

The knock came again.

Harder.

Daniel walked toward the entrance.

Nicole whispered:

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because he’s here.””

Daniel opened the door.

And standing outside was the last person he expected.

The man who had been in their family photos.

The man who had held Noah as a baby.

The man who had called Daniel his brother.

Daniel stared.

“James?””

May you like

His older brother’s face went pale.

And behind him, Marcus stood in the shadows.
