Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed
Daniel didn’t drive immediately.
He sat behind the wheel, staring through the windshield.
The message remained on his phone.
*You should have asked your wife what happened the night you got your vasectomy.*
His fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
The night of his surgery.
Three years ago.
A memory he had buried.
A memory that suddenly felt like it belonged to someone else.
He remembered the hospital.
The cold hallway.
The doctor explaining the procedure.
Nicole sitting beside him afterward.
Holding his hand.
Telling him everything would be okay.
But now one question kept repeating.
What happened that night?
Daniel started the engine.
When he arrived at the meeting location, Marcus was already waiting.
A quiet parking area behind an empty office building.
No cameras.
No witnesses.
Daniel immediately noticed.
“You picked a place with no people.””
Marcus looked nervous.
“That’s why I chose it.””
Daniel stepped out.
“You’re afraid.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
Daniel walked closer.
“Start talking.””
Marcus sighed.
“I didn’t plan for this.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
Marcus looked down.
“I came into your family because of you.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Explain.””
“You ruined my life.””
Daniel stared.
“I stopped you from stealing from my company.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You humiliated me.””
“You were stealing.””
“I was desperate.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You always have a reason.””
Marcus looked angry now.
“You don’t know what it’s like watching someone like you.””
“Someone like me?””
“Successful. Respected. Loved.””
Daniel said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“You had everything.””
“And that made you think you deserved my life?””
Marcus looked away.
“I wanted revenge.””
The word hung between them.
Daniel felt something cold move through him.
“You got close to my wife because of revenge?””
“At first.””
“At first?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Then it changed.””
Daniel’s face showed nothing.
“But you still stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because Nicole told me something.””
Daniel waited.
“She told me you weren’t the man everyone thought you were.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What did she say?””
Marcus hesitated.
“She said you hid things from her.””
Daniel remembered the message.
The surgery.
The secret.
“Like what?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“The night of your vasectomy.””
Daniel went still.
“Tell me.””
Marcus looked around.
“You never told Nicole the full truth.””
Daniel stared.
“What truth?””
Marcus took a breath.
“After your procedure, you received a call.””
Daniel frowned.
“Yes.””
“From the hospital.””
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
“They told you there was an issue with the sample.””
The world seemed to slow.
Daniel remembered.
A phone call.
A nurse.
A conversation he barely understood.
But he remembered one thing.
They said they needed him to come back.
He never did.
Because Nicole told him it was probably nothing.
Because life got busy.
Because he trusted her.
Marcus continued.
“The doctor told you the procedure might not have worked immediately.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s the part you don’t know.””
Daniel stared.
“You’re lying.””
Marcus pulled out his phone.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
He opened an email.
A medical document.
Daniel took the phone.
Read it.
And felt the ground disappear.
The document showed a follow-up appointment.
A canceled appointment.
A signature.
Nicole Carter.
Daniel looked up.
“Why would she cancel it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t need to.
Daniel already understood.
But one question remained.
If Nicole knew the vasectomy wasn’t confirmed…
Why did she let him believe he could never have another child?
Daniel handed the phone back.
“What else?””
Marcus looked guilty.
“There’s more.””
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“Of course there is.””
Marcus swallowed.
“The baby…”
He stopped.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What about the baby?””
Marcus looked terrified.
“The baby might not be mine.””
Daniel froze.
The sentence didn’t make sense.
“What did you say?””
Marcus looked away.
“I had a reason to believe Nicole was already pregnant before we started.””
Daniel felt sick.
“You’re saying she cheated on you too?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
And that was answer enough.
Daniel took a step back.
His entire world had shifted.
Nicole had betrayed him.
Marcus had betrayed him.
But now another possibility appeared.
One that changed everything.
The child Nicole was carrying.
The child everyone assumed belonged to Marcus.
Might belong to someone else.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Who?””
Marcus whispered:
“The man Nicole was trying to protect.””
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
Nicole.
Daniel answered.
Her voice came through immediately.
“Daniel?””
He heard panic.
“What happened?””
Silence.
Then:
“I found something.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What?””
Nicole’s voice trembled.
“A second ultrasound.””
Daniel opened his eyes.
“Where?””
“In Marcus’s apartment.””
The world went silent.

Then Nicole whispered:
“Daniel… the father’s name is written on it.””
