Chapter 9: The Second Ultrasound
Daniel arrived home faster than he remembered driving.
The entire way, one thought repeated.
A second ultrasound.
Another name.
Another secret.
When he entered the house, Maya was sitting on the couch with Noah.
Both looked up.
Neither asked where he had been.
They already knew.
Something had changed.
Nicole stood near the kitchen island.
She looked different.
Smaller.
Not the elegant woman in the beige dress who had controlled the room earlier.
Just Nicole.
A woman who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Where is it?”” Daniel asked.
She held a folder.
“I didn’t want to open it.””
Daniel took it.
“Why?””
“Because I knew.””
He looked at her.
“Knew what?””
“That whatever was inside would destroy what was left.””
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside was another ultrasound report.
The paper looked almost identical.
Same hospital.
Same format.
Same patient.
Nicole Carter.
But underneath the medical details was a section Daniel had never seen before.
*Father Information.*
His eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
Maya saw his face.
“Dad?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Nicole covered her mouth.
Because she already knew what he was seeing.
The father’s name.
The man connected to the baby.
The man who had been hiding behind every lie.
Daniel slowly lowered the paper.
“No.””
Nicole started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I swear.””
Daniel looked at the report again.
Then at her.
“How long?””
Nicole shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought it was Marcus.””
“Thought?””
She nodded.
“Marcus told me it was his.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So even your affair partner lied to you.””
Nicole closed her eyes.
“I deserve that.””
Maya stood.
“What does it say?””
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, he didn’t want to answer.
But he promised.
No more protecting.
No more secrets.
He handed her the paper.
Maya read it.
Her face changed.
Then she looked at her mother.
“No.””
The word came out like a whisper.
Nicole cried harder.
“Maya…”
“No.””
Maya stepped back.
“You knew?””
“No.””
“You knew someone else was involved.””
“I knew there was a possibility.””
“And you still blamed me?””
Nicole had no answer.
Because there was none.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Daniel took the paper from Maya.
He looked toward the stairs.
“Noah needs to stay away from this.””
Maya nodded.
But she didn’t move.
She looked at her father.
“Who is it?””
Daniel stared at the name.
A name that felt impossible.
A name that made every memory from the last few years feel different.
Before he could answer, his phone buzzed.
Another message.
From Marcus.
*Now you know why I warned you.*
Daniel ignored it.
Another message appeared.
*Ask Nicole what happened the night she met him.*
Daniel looked at Nicole.
“What night?””
Her face drained.
“What?””
“The night you met him.””
Nicole went completely still.
Maya noticed.
“Mom?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You told me you met Marcus at the charity event.””
Nicole looked away.
“Yes.””
“Was that true?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Nicole.””
She whispered:
“No.””
The confession was barely audible.
Maya stared.
“No?””
Nicole shook her head.
“I met him before that.””
Daniel felt a wave of exhaustion.
“Where?””
Nicole looked at him.
And the fear in her eyes was different now.
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of what would happen when the truth came out.
“At the hospital.””
Daniel froze.
“What hospital?””
Nicole’s lips trembled.
“The night of your vasectomy.””
Nobody moved.
Maya looked confused.
Noah watched from the hallway, holding his hoodie sleeve.
Daniel’s voice was almost a whisper.
“What did you do?””
Nicole started crying.
“I went there because I was angry.””
“Angry about what?””
“You never wanted another baby.””
Daniel stared.
“I thought we agreed.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Nicole looked down.
“Because I wanted one more chance to feel important.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
Nicole closed her eyes.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“I didn’t meet Marcus three years ago.””
A pause.
“I met the father of my baby that night.””
Daniel’s blood went cold.
Maya grabbed the edge of the couch.
May you like
And Nicole whispered the name she had spent three years hiding.
“It was someone you trusted most.””
