Chapter 7: The Reason Marcus Came

Daniel read the sentence again.

Then once more.

The paper shook slightly in his hand.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was trying to understand how deep the deception went.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, Nicole doesn’t know the real reason I came into your family.*

The kitchen suddenly felt colder.

Maya watched her father’s face.

“Dad?””

Daniel folded the paper.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Mom’s room.””

Nicole stepped forward.

“Maya, you had no right to go through my things.””

Maya turned toward her.

“No right?””

Her voice was quiet.

That made it worse.

“You accused me of being pregnant. You lied to Dad. You brought someone into our house and made me the target.””

Nicole looked away.

Maya continued.

“Don’t talk to me about rights.””

Daniel looked at both of them.

“Enough.””

They stopped.

He looked at Nicole.

“Did you know Marcus wrote this?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Her face tightened.

“Yes.””

Daniel studied her.

He believed one thing.

Nicole was capable of lying.

But right now, her confusion looked real.

She truly didn’t know.

He looked back at the letter.

“Then why did he leave this?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel walked to the island and placed the paper beside the ultrasound.

Two pieces of evidence.

Two different betrayals.

And somehow, they were connected.

“Dad,” Maya said softly.

Daniel looked at her.

“I need to know what’s happening.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“No more protecting people.””

The words hit him.

Because they weren’t only about Nicole.

They were about him.

Daniel had spent his entire life believing protection was love.

Protecting his family.

Protecting employees.

Protecting friends.

But sometimes protection only gave people more time to hurt you.

“I promise,” he said.

Maya looked at him.

“Promise me you’ll tell the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“I promise.””

Nicole sat down slowly.

She looked exhausted.

“I don’t understand.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“What?””

“Why would Marcus say that?””

“Because he knows something.””

“About what?””

Daniel picked up the letter.

“I don’t know yet.””

Nicole looked frightened.

And for the first time that night, Daniel saw something other than guilt.

He saw fear.

Real fear.

“What did Marcus tell you when you started seeing him?”” Daniel asked.

Nicole closed her eyes.

“He said he admired me.””

Daniel said nothing.

“He said I was invisible in my own home.””

Maya looked away.

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like an excuse.

Not a reason.

“He told me you didn’t appreciate me.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“And you believed him?””

Nicole whispered:

“I wanted to.””

That answer was more painful than a lie.

Because it meant she had been searching for something.

Someone.

A person willing to tell her what she wanted to hear.

Daniel walked away.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed one name.

Marcus.

Daniel answered.

No greeting.

No patience.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then Marcus spoke.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You left a letter.””

Another pause.

Maya watched him carefully.

Nicole stood.

Daniel listened.

Then he said:

“You’re going to explain everything.””

He ended the call.

Nicole looked at him.

“What did he say?””

Daniel grabbed his keys.

“He wants to meet.””

“No.””

The word came from Nicole.

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“I mean… maybe you shouldn’t.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus is dangerous.””

The sentence surprised everyone.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew that?””

Nicole looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

“After I found out he was still married…”

Daniel waited.

“He threatened me.””

The room went silent.

Maya’s eyes widened.

“Threatened you?””

Nicole nodded.

“He said if I tried to end things, he would tell you everything.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And you stayed?””

“I was scared.””

“For yourself?””

Nicole looked at Maya.

Then Noah’s bedroom door upstairs.

“For all of us.””

Daniel looked away.

A complicated emotion crossed his face.

Anger.

Disappointment.

And something close to pity.

But pity wasn’t forgiveness.

Not yet.

“I’m going alone.””

Nicole shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re not going anywhere near him.””

“I need to tell him—”

“You’ve done enough.””

The words cut deep.

Nicole lowered her eyes.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Maya followed.

“Dad.””

He stopped.

She looked scared.

“Be careful.””

Daniel nodded.

“I will.””

But before he stepped outside, his phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Daniel opened it.

One photo.

A picture of Marcus standing outside their house.

Taken earlier that evening.

Under it, one sentence.

*You should have asked your wife what happened the night you got your vasectomy.*

Daniel froze.

Because he had never told anyone about that night.

May you like

Not even Marcus.

Not even Nicole.
