Chapter 13: The Doctor’s Confession
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody moved.
Nicole stared at the screen like it was a ghost from a life she thought she had buried.
Daniel looked at her.
“Answer it.””
Her eyes lifted.
“Daniel…”
“Answer it.””
The command was calm.
But everyone heard the pain behind it.
Nicole slowly picked up the phone.
“Hello?””
The room was silent enough that they could hear the faint voice on the other end.
Nicole’s face changed almost immediately.
Fear.
Recognition.
Regret.
Then she turned the phone on speaker.
“Nicole?””
The doctor’s voice filled the kitchen.
An older woman.
Professional.
But nervous.
“Dr. Ellis,” Nicole whispered.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Why are you calling?””
A pause.
Then the doctor spoke.
“Because I know Daniel has questions.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I have more than questions.””
The voice became quieter.
“Daniel, I’m sorry.””
Those words again.
Sorry.
A word everyone used after the damage was already done.
“Tell me the truth,” Daniel said.
“I should have contacted you three years ago.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because Nicole asked me not to.””
Daniel looked at his wife.
Nicole immediately shook her head.
“I never asked her to lie.””
The doctor sighed.
“You asked me not to tell him the full results.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Full results?””
Maya stood frozen beside the counter.
Marcus and James said nothing.
The entire family was listening.
The doctor continued.
“The procedure was incomplete.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know that now.””
“No.””
The doctor’s voice changed.
“You don’t know everything.””
A chill moved through the room.
Daniel looked at the phone.
“What else?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then said:
“The procedure wasn’t the only thing we discovered.””
Nicole closed her eyes.
“Stop.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was sharp.
“No more stopping.””
The doctor continued.
“During the follow-up, we discovered Daniel had a medical complication.””
Daniel frowned.
“What complication?””
“A condition that made future pregnancies extremely unlikely.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
The doctor explained.
“Even without the vasectomy, the chance of having another child was very low.””
The words hit him.
Daniel looked at Nicole.
“So?””
The doctor continued.
“Nicole was aware.””
Maya’s face changed.
“Mom knew?””
Nicole looked away.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“She knew.””
The doctor answered.
“Yes.””
A silence followed.
A terrible silence.
Daniel finally understood.
Nicole hadn’t just hidden a medical result.
She had hidden the fact that his dream of another child had been almost impossible.
But somehow…
She was pregnant.
The impossible had happened.
“Doctor Ellis,” Daniel said.
“Yes?””
“How did you know the baby existed?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because I performed a paternity test.””
Nicole’s head snapped up.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel’s face went blank.
“Two years ago?””
The doctor sighed.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“The child was already born.””
The kitchen disappeared.
For a moment, Daniel couldn’t hear anything.
Not the refrigerator.
Not the breathing around him.
Nothing.
“The child was born?””
Nicole covered her mouth.
Maya looked at her mother.
“What child?””
Daniel looked at Nicole.
And suddenly the ultrasound was no longer about a pregnancy.
It was about something much bigger.
A secret that had existed before tonight.
“Nicole.””
She started crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
Daniel stared.
“When?””
She had no answer.
“Nicole.””
Her shoulders collapsed.
“After I figured out what to do.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“What to do?””
He looked around.
“You had years.””
The doctor spoke again.
“Daniel, I’m sorry. I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
His voice broke.
“You should have.””
The doctor continued.
“There is one more thing.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Of course there was.
“What?””
“The paternity test.””
He opened his eyes.
“What about it?””
“It showed the father.””
Daniel looked at Nicole.
James looked down.
Marcus went completely still.
Daniel asked:
“Who was it?””
The doctor was silent.
Then:
“I’m sending you the report now.””
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
A file appeared.
His hands felt heavy as he opened it.
The entire room waited.
He read the first line.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
Because the father’s name wasn’t James.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t anyone he expected.
Daniel looked up slowly.
Maya saw his face.
“Dad?””
He couldn’t speak.
Nicole whispered:
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
And the pain in his eyes answered before his mouth did.
“The baby isn’t from the affair.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel held the phone.
“The baby belongs to…”
He stopped.
Because saying the name would make it real.
Then he looked toward the stairs.
Toward Noah.
Toward the life he thought he understood.
May you like
And whispered:
“The baby belongs to someone in this house.””
