The Test That Wasn't Mine / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Question Nobody Wanted to Hear

The kitchen had never been so quiet.

Daniel stared at the second document.

Nicole stood across from him, frozen.

Maya could feel something bigger than the pregnancy test happening.

Something hidden.

Something her mother had been protecting.

“Dad,” Maya whispered.

Daniel folded the paper slowly.

“Go upstairs with Noah.””

Maya looked at him.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I’m not leaving.””

Daniel looked at his daughter.

For a moment, he saw the little girl who used to hold his hand walking through grocery stores.

The teenager who told him everything.

The young woman who had spent the last ten minutes being accused by the person who should have protected her.

His voice softened.

“Please.””

Maya looked at Nicole.

Then back at her father.

Finally, she nodded.

“Come on, Noah.””

Noah stood slowly.

Before leaving, he looked at Daniel.

“Dad?””

Daniel turned.

The boy swallowed.

“I didn’t want Mom to get in trouble.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“I know.””

“I just didn’t want Maya to get blamed.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

Noah left with Maya.

But neither of them went upstairs.

They stayed just outside the kitchen doorway.

Listening.

Watching.

Daniel placed the document on the island.

“Who is he?””

Nicole said nothing.

“Nicole.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“I’m starting to understand.””

“No, you’re not.””

She stepped closer.

“You think everything is simple because you found a paper.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Simple?””

His voice remained calm.

That calm was worse.

“You put a pregnancy test in front of our daughter.””

Nicole looked away.

“You don’t know why.””

“Then tell me.””

She didn’t.

Seconds passed.

Daniel looked at the ultrasound again.

Then at the receipt.

Then at his wife.

“You planned this.””

Nicole immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Daniel—”

“You needed everyone to believe Maya was pregnant.””

Nicole’s face changed.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

Daniel saw it.

“Why?””

She crossed her arms.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

Nicole walked around the island.

Her expensive heels clicked against the floor.

“You always think you’re the perfect father.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Everything.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You always look at Maya like she’s your greatest achievement.””

“She’s my daughter.””

“She’s everyone’s favorite.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s what this is about?””

“No.””

But Nicole said it too quickly.

Maya, standing outside the kitchen, covered her mouth.

She had spent years trying to earn her mother’s approval.

The perfect grades.

The perfect behavior.

The careful words.

And now she was hearing something she never imagined.

Her mother wasn’t angry because Maya failed.

Her mother was angry because Maya succeeded.

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t recognize you.””

Nicole’s eyes flashed.

“Don’t say that.””

“Why?””

“Because I’m still the woman who stood beside you when nobody else did.””

Daniel looked down.

For a second, there was pain.

A memory.

Twenty years.

Two decades of marriage.

A family.

Then the reality returned.

“Who is the father?””

Nicole didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Nicole.””

Still nothing.

His phone suddenly vibrated on the counter.

Everyone froze.

Nicole looked at it.

Daniel looked at it.

The screen lit up.

A message preview appeared.

One sentence.

*I can’t keep pretending the baby isn’t mine.*

Daniel’s face changed.

Nicole reached for the phone.

Too late.

He had already seen the sender’s name.

Maya saw it from the doorway.

And even from across the kitchen, she recognized the name.

Because it belonged to someone who had been in their home.

Someone her mother had introduced as “just a family friend.””

Daniel picked up the phone.

His hand tightened around it.

“Nicole.””

She started crying.

“Please.””

But Daniel wasn’t looking at the tears anymore.

He was looking at the truth.

Three years after his surgery.

A pregnancy hidden from him.

A test used to destroy his daughter.

And a message from another man.

Daniel picked up the ultrasound paper.

He looked at the date one more time.

Then he looked directly into Nicole’s eyes.

“Nicole…”

His voice was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

“I had a vasectomy three years ago.””

Maya froze.

Noah stepped back.

Nicole’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Daniel held the ultrasound between them.

May you like

Then he asked the question that would break whatever was left of their family.

“Whose baby is this?””
