Chapter 12: The Hospital Record

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at the message.

The photo was blurry.

But one thing was clear.

A hospital document.

A signature.

A timestamp.

The night that had become the center of every lie.

“Who sent that?”” Maya asked.

Daniel locked his phone.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

Daniel moved the phone away.

“No.””

Marcus stopped.

“You need to know what it means.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You’ve done enough.””

The words landed.

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.””

James looked exhausted.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel turned toward his brother.

“I need answers.””

James looked down.

“I know.””

“Did you know about the medical report?””

James hesitated.

“No.””

Daniel watched him.

“Think carefully.””

“I didn’t.””

For once, Daniel believed him.

Not because James deserved trust.

But because his reaction looked genuine.

Daniel walked to the counter.

He opened the image again.

The document showed a hospital follow-up.

A report that should have gone directly to him.

But there was something strange.

A signature.

Not his.

Not the doctor’s.

Someone had signed as a recipient.

Daniel zoomed in.

Then froze.

Nicole noticed.

“What?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He stared at the screen.

“Daniel?””

He turned the phone.

Everyone looked.

The signature belonged to Nicole.

Maya’s face fell.

“Mom.””

Nicole immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You signed for my medical records.””

“I don’t remember.””

“You don’t remember?””

“I was stressed.””

Daniel laughed.

“Everyone in this house has a reason.””

Nicole stepped closer.

“I swear I don’t remember.””

Daniel looked at the document.

Then at her.

“What did you do with the results?””

Nicole went silent.

That silence was enough.

Maya stood.

“Mom.””

Nicole whispered:

“I destroyed them.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared.

“You destroyed my medical records?””

“I panicked.””

“Why?””

Nicole cried.

“Because I saw the results.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What results?””

She looked at him.

“The procedure wasn’t complete.””

The kitchen went silent.

Maya looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel answered.

“It means I could have had another child.””

Nicole nodded.

“But you didn’t know.””

Daniel stared.

“Because you hid it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nicole’s voice broke.

“Because I thought if you knew, you would want another baby.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“That makes no sense.””

“I knew you.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You knew what you wanted me to be.””

Nicole cried.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would choose a child over me.””

The honesty was devastating.

Daniel stepped back.

“You didn’t trust me.””

Nicole whispered:

“I didn’t trust myself.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Noah appeared again.

His small voice cut through the tension.

“Why is everyone always leaving?””

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately walked toward him.

“Noah.””

The boy looked at James.

Then Marcus.

Then Nicole.

“Are we still a family?””

Daniel knelt.

He didn’t have a perfect answer.

Not anymore.

But he had one promise.

“Yes.””

Noah looked uncertain.

“How?””

Daniel held his hand.

“Because families aren’t only the people who never hurt each other.””

His eyes moved briefly toward the adults.

“They’re also the people who decide what they do after.””

Noah nodded slowly.

Daniel sent him upstairs again.

When he returned, the kitchen was quiet.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“What now?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The person who sent that message.””

Daniel waited.

“It wasn’t me.””

James frowned.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at Nicole.

Nicole’s face changed.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“You know.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t.””

“You do.””

Nicole backed away.

“I thought it was over.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What was over?””

She looked terrified.

“The person who helped me hide everything.””

Maya whispered:

“Who?””

Nicole closed her eyes.

Then she said:

“Someone from the hospital.””

Daniel frowned.

“What person?””

Nicole looked at him.

“The nurse who handled your procedure.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Why would a nurse help you?””

Nicole didn’t answer.

She looked at the ultrasound.

The pregnancy test.

The receipts.

All the pieces.

Then she whispered:

“Because she wasn’t helping me.””

A pause.

“She was helping herself.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

Nicole’s phone suddenly rang.

The screen showed a name.

A name nobody expected.

Nicole looked at it.

Then went pale.

Daniel saw the name.

And his entire body went still.

May you like

Because the person calling was the last person who should have known their family’s secrets.

*The doctor who performed Daniel’s vasectomy.*
