Chapter 14: The Truth That Was Buried
Nobody moved.
The words were impossible.
*Someone in this house.*
Daniel looked at Nicole.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
And that was the detail he couldn’t ignore.
“You knew.””
Nicole shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“You knew something.””
“I suspected.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Suspected what?””
Nicole’s tears fell.
“That the test might not be Marcus’s.””
Maya stared.
“Then whose?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at the paternity report again.
The name was there.
Clear.
Impossible.
He handed the phone to Maya.
She read it.
Then her hand covered her mouth.
“Dad…”
Daniel didn’t look at her.
He couldn’t.
Because he was trying to understand how the last three years of his life had been built on a lie.
The baby.
The affair.
The surgery.
The secrets.
Everything connected back to one moment.
The night he trusted everyone.
James stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
Daniel raised a hand.
“Don’t.””
His brother stopped.
“I need you to understand something.””
James looked at him.
“I spent three years believing I was the worst person in this room.””
James lowered his eyes.
“But now I don’t even know.””
Nicole whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
“I don’t know what else to say.””
“Nothing.””
She flinched.
“Because there is nothing you can say.””
Maya looked between them.
“What does the report say?””
Daniel finally answered.
“The father is…”
His voice stopped.
Then he forced himself.
“The father is not James.””
James closed his eyes.
Not relief.
Pain.
Because that meant his betrayal was real, but it wasn’t the deepest betrayal.
“The father is not Marcus.””
Marcus looked away.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at Nicole.
“Tell them.””
Nicole shook her head.
“I can’t.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You have to.””
She sat down.
Her entire body looked exhausted.
“The night of your surgery…”
Everyone became still.
Again.
“I wasn’t alone.””
Daniel waited.
“I met someone.””
“Who?””
Nicole looked toward the hallway.
Toward the bedrooms.
Toward the life they had built.
Then she whispered:
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s face changed.
“My father is dead.””
Nicole nodded.
“I know.””
Maya looked confused.
“What?””
Nicole cried.
“It wasn’t a relationship.””
Daniel stared.
“Then what was it?””
Nicole covered her face.
“It was a mistake.””
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“No.””
She looked up.
“Don’t use that word.””
Her eyes filled.
“Because it wasn’t just a mistake.””
The truth finally came out.
“The man I met that night was your father’s old friend.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“He was at the hospital because he knew your family.””
James looked shocked.
“Who?””
Nicole whispered the name.
And Daniel recognized it.
An old family acquaintance.
A man who had attended their wedding.
A man who had disappeared years ago.
Maya sat down.
“So the baby…”
Daniel looked at the report.
The DNA match.
The impossible truth.
“The baby is connected to my father’s family.””
Nicole nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel felt numb.
Not because the betrayal was less painful.
Because it was bigger than he imagined.
His child.
Or rather, the child he thought belonged to someone else.
Was connected to a secret from a generation before him.
A secret involving his own family.
Then James spoke.
“Daniel.””
He looked over.
James held his phone.
“There’s something you need to see.””
Daniel stared.
“What now?””
James swallowed.
“I found this before I came here.””
He opened a message.
A photo.
An old document.
Daniel took the phone.
It was a birth record.
Not for Nicole’s baby.
For someone else.
Someone much closer.
Someone whose name made Daniel’s hands go cold.
Because the record revealed something that changed his entire understanding of his own family.
James whispered:
“Daniel…”
“You need to know.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
James took a breath.
“The man you called your father…”
A pause.
“He wasn’t your biological father either.””
The kitchen went completely silent.
Daniel stared.
“No.””
James nodded slowly.
“I’m sorry.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Maya grabbed the counter.
“Dad…”
But he wasn’t listening.
Because suddenly the question was no longer about Nicole.
Or Marcus.
Or the baby.

The question was:
Who was Daniel Carter?
