Chapter 1: The Voice Behind the House
“Dad! Break open that wall!””
I had spent six years believing my home was the safest place on earth.
Then my daughter started screaming at a wall.
The sound of Lily’s fists hitting the wooden panel echoed through the luxury hallway of our mansion like a warning I was too late to hear. The bright chandelier above us still shined. The polished floors still reflected our faces. The family portraits still hung perfectly straight.
Everything looked normal.
Except my six-year-old daughter was crying so hard she could barely breathe.
“Dad! Please! She’s in there!””
I froze halfway down the hallway.
Lily stood barefoot against the dark wooden wall panels, her pink dress wrinkled from panic. Her braided hair shook with every sob as she slammed both tiny fists against the same section of wood.
Behind her, several feet away, Vanessa stood completely still.
My wife’s second wife.
The woman who had smiled at breakfast that morning.
The woman who had packed Lily’s lunch and kissed her forehead before school.
The woman who was now staring at that wall like it had just revealed a secret she had spent years hiding.
“Lily?”” I said, moving closer.
“What are you doing?””
She turned toward me with wet cheeks.
“Daddy, I heard Mommy.””
The hallway went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
Because there was only one person Lily could mean.
Claire.
My first wife.
Her mother.
The woman who disappeared three years ago.
I walked faster.
“Sweetheart, what did you say?””
Lily grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the wall.
“Mommy is behind there. She called my name.””
My heart started pounding.
I looked at Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“Daniel, she’s confused,” Vanessa said quickly.
“She probably heard something from outside.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
I had learned over the years that Vanessa was good at staying composed. She never raised her voice. Never lost control. Even during the worst moments, she had a way of making everything sound reasonable.
But now her fingers were trembling.
“Lily,” I whispered, kneeling beside my daughter.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
She wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“I was walking here because I dropped my bracelet.”” She pointed toward the wall.
“Then I heard someone crying.””
Her lower lip shook.
“I thought it was a dream. But then she said my name.””
“What did she say?””
Lily looked at the wooden panel.
“She said, ‘Lily, don’t leave me.’”
A cold feeling moved through my body.
Three years ago, Claire vanished after leaving the house during an argument. The police searched. My family searched. I searched every street, every hospital, every place I thought she could have gone.
No one ever found her.
The case eventually went cold.
Everyone told me I had to accept that she was gone.
But my daughter was looking at a wall, telling me her mother was inside.
I pressed my ear against the wood.
At first, I heard nothing.
Then—
Knock.
My entire body locked.
A second sound came.
Knock.
Slow.
Weak.
From the other side.
Lily gasped.
“I told you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
I turned around.
She looked frightened now.
Not confused.
Not skeptical.
Afraid.
“What?”” I asked.
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stood up and grabbed the edge of the wooden panel.
“Daniel, don’t.””
The way she said it made me stop.
Not because she told me to.
Because she sounded like someone who knew exactly what was behind it.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“Nothing.””
I stared at her.
“Nothing is not hidden behind a locked wall in my house.””
Her face tightened.
“Daniel, please. Let me explain.””
But Lily suddenly screamed.
“Daddy!””
I looked back.
She was pointing.
A small crack had appeared between the wooden panels.
Something was behind them.
Something that was never supposed to be seen.
I grabbed the loose piece of wood and pulled.
The panel didn’t move.
I pulled harder.
The sound of breaking wood exploded through the hallway.
Vanessa jumped.
“Daniel, STOP!””
I ripped the panel away.
Behind the beautiful wooden wall was something impossible.
A steel door.
Hidden.
Old.
Heavy.
A thick metal lock hung across the center.
For several seconds, none of us moved.
The mansion suddenly felt different.
Like it had been pretending to be a home.
And underneath the walls, it had been hiding a nightmare.
Lily stepped closer.
“Mommy?””
I reached toward the lock.
Then I heard it.
A faint voice.
Barely more than a whisper.
“Lily…”
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
Everyone in the hallway knew that voice.
Lily collapsed against my shoulder, crying.
“Mommy!””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the steel door.
And for the first time since I met her, Vanessa looked completely terrified.
Then the voice came again.
“Daniel…”
I stopped breathing.
“Don’t let Vanessa open it.””
I slowly turned toward my wife.
Her eyes widened.
Her mouth fell open.
May you like
And the woman standing in my hallway looked less like someone who had discovered a secret.
She looked like someone whose secret had finally been discovered.
