Chapter 9: The Truth Claire Hid
The underground room went silent.
Claire’s voice echoed through the concrete walls.
Not from above.
Not from the steel door.
Somewhere beneath us.
Somewhere else.
I looked at Richard.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
For the first time since he entered the mansion, he looked uncertain.
That scared me.
Because Richard Hale always had an answer.
Always.
I stepped closer to the wall.
“Claire?””
A faint sound came back.
“Daniel.””
My chest tightened.
“You’re not behind the door?””
“No.””
I looked toward the ceiling.
“Then where are you?””
A pause.
“I don’t know.””
Richard suddenly moved.
“Enough.””
I turned.
“You knew?””
His face hardened.
“Not everything.””
That was the first honest thing he had said.
Marcus, who had followed us downstairs after escaping the men upstairs, stepped into the room.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“How did you get here?””
He ignored the question.
“Richard built multiple chambers.””
I stared at the files.
“The room upstairs was one.””
“Yes.””
“The underground room is another.””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
“And Claire?””
Marcus looked toward the walls.
“She may have been moved.””
My stomach dropped.
“Moved?””
Richard looked away.
That answer told me enough.
I turned toward him.
“What did you do?””
Richard stayed silent.
I grabbed his jacket.
“What did you do to my wife?””
For the first time, the powerful businessman looked old.
Tired.
Not like a monster.
Like someone who had carried a terrible secret for too long.
“She wasn’t supposed to be there.””
I pushed him back.
“She was there for three years.””
“Yes.””
“Because of you.””
Richard looked at me.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“Because of what she knew.””
I wanted to hit him.
But then I saw something on the table.
A small recording device.
An old one.
I picked it up.
“What is this?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Play it.””
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
Claire.
Younger.
Scared.
“If you’re hearing this, Daniel, it means I couldn’t tell you myself.””
My entire body froze.
The recording continued.
“I’m sorry.””
I closed my eyes.
Her voice.
After three years.
“I need you to understand something. The day I disappeared wasn’t because I wanted to leave.””
A pause.
“I ran because I found out the truth about how I entered this family.””
I opened my eyes.
Richard looked uncomfortable.
Claire’s voice continued.
“Daniel, your first meeting with me wasn’t random.””
The room spun.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“I didn’t know at first. I thought our relationship was real.””
I stared at Marcus.
At Richard.
At the files.
“Then I discovered the truth.””
My hands shook.
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“Daniel, your life was connected to my father before you ever met me.””
I looked at Richard.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
The recording continued.
“He studied you.””
A pause.
“He chose you.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
Richard looked down.
“Why?””
I demanded.
Claire answered from the recording.
“Because you were the only person who could expose him.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward him.
“You knew?””
His silence was enough.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“Everyone knew.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces that ruined my life.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You think I ruined your life?””
His voice changed.
“You had a family. A successful career. A beautiful daughter.””
He pointed at the recording.
“Claire destroyed that.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“Yes.””
His expression hardened.
“She couldn’t let go of the truth.””
I looked at the files again.
My name everywhere.
My life documented.
My marriage.
My daughter.
Everything.
A plan.
A design.
But then I saw something else.
A document beneath the others.
One name.
One signature.
A signature that didn’t belong to Richard.
Or Claire.
Or Vanessa.
I picked it up.
My hands went cold.
Because at the bottom of the page was a name I recognized.
Someone who had been helping me search for Claire from the beginning.
Someone who claimed to be my friend.
Marcus.
I looked up slowly.
Marcus’s face changed.
“Daniel…”
I held up the document.
“Why is your name on this?””
Nobody spoke.
The underground room became completely silent.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through the hidden speaker.
“Daniel…”
I turned.
Her voice sounded terrified.
“Don’t trust him.””
Marcus looked toward the speaker.
May you like
And for the first time…
Marcus looked afraid.
