Chapter 14: The Last Secret
Nobody spoke.
The message remained in my hand.
One sentence.
One accusation.
One final secret.
*The person who betrayed me is still inside this family.*
I looked at everyone.
And suddenly I hated that I had to.
Because every person standing there had hurt me.
Every person had hidden something.
Every person had a reason.
Richard noticed my expression.
“You see?””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He smiled faintly.
“Trust is the easiest thing to destroy.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still think you know everything.””
Claire’s face tightened.
“I know enough.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You know what you survived.””
He pointed toward the letter.
“But Daniel needs to know what you did.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at Claire.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence hurt.
“Claire.””
She closed her eyes.
“There’s something I didn’t tell you.””
I almost laughed.
Of course.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“Tell me.””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“When I discovered Richard’s operation, I didn’t just find documents.””
“What did you find?””
“A list.””
“A list of what?””
“The people involved.””
The room went quiet.
“And?””
She swallowed.
“Your father was on it.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I felt anger rise.
“You said he was trying to stop them.””
“He was.””
“Then why was he on the list?””
“Because he helped create it before he tried to destroy it.””
The truth landed slowly.
Like a weight.
My father wasn’t completely innocent.
Nobody was.
Not Richard.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Claire.
I sat down.
The room spun.
“My whole life…”
Claire moved closer.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“But I made a mistake.””
I looked at her.
“What mistake?””
“I thought if I carried the truth alone, you would be safe.””
I looked around.
“And was I?””
She had no answer.
Because I wasn’t.
Nobody was.
A sudden alarm sounded.
Everyone looked up.
The hidden monitors flashed.
Marcus moved toward them.
“What is that?””
Richard’s face changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stared at the screen.
“He activated the failsafe.””
My father’s voice came through.
“I warned you.””
The walls began vibrating.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“What’s happening?””
I pulled her close.
“It’s okay.””
But I didn’t believe it.
Marcus looked at the monitors.
“The system is deleting everything.””
“What?””
“The files. The recordings. Everything.””
Richard moved toward the equipment.
“No.””
For the first time, he wasn’t calm.
He was desperate.
“You don’t get to erase my work.””
My father answered:
“It was never your work.””
The screen changed.
A countdown appeared.
Five minutes.
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel, we need to leave.””
I looked at the files.
At the evidence.
At everything we needed.
“If we leave, all of this disappears.””
“Yes.””
“Then we lose the truth.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed at me.
“You already found the truth.””
I didn’t understand.
Then Marcus picked up one file.
“Daniel.””
He opened it.
Inside was a list.
Not names.
Locations.
Places where people had been hidden.
People Richard had controlled.
People who might still be alive.
“This isn’t just about us.””
I understood.
The evidence wasn’t the files.
It was the people.
The survivors.
The ones who needed answers.
I looked at Richard.
“You spent years hiding this.””
He stared at me.
“You have no idea what you’re destroying.””
I stepped closer.
“No.””
I looked toward Claire.
“Your empire is what’s being destroyed.””
The countdown reached two minutes.
Vanessa walked toward Richard.
He looked at her.
“You would choose them?””
She stared at him.
“I choose myself.””
For the first time, she sounded free.
The countdown reached one minute.
Then the entire mansion shook.
A deep mechanical sound moved through the walls.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“We have to go.””
But before we left, Richard called out.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
He looked different now.
Older.
Smaller.
“You think you won.””
I stared at him.
“You lost.””
He smiled faintly.
“No.””
He looked toward Claire.
“You still don’t know the last secret.””
Claire froze.
Richard continued:
“Ask her what happened the night she disappeared.””
I looked at Claire.
Her face changed.
And I knew.
There was one more thing.
May you like
One more truth.
One more wound.
