Chapter 12: The Final Test

Nobody moved.

The voice continued echoing through the underground chamber.

“He was mine.””

I stared at the speaker.

The words didn’t make sense.

Richard looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Terrified.

That told me everything.

“You know who I am?”” I asked.

The voice answered:

“I know everything about you.””

My skin went cold.

Marcus looked around the room.

Trying to find the source.

“Where are you?””

The voice laughed.

“Still searching for doors, Marcus?””

Marcus froze.

Richard looked at him.

“You know him?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

I turned.

“Marcus?””

His face changed.

“I thought he was dead.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at the speaker.

“Daniel…”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Your father.””

The room disappeared around me.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

I had seen the funeral.

I had watched the coffin.

I had said goodbye.

My father was gone.

The speaker crackled.

“Hello, son.””

I stopped breathing.

A sound escaped my throat.

Not a word.

Not a question.

Just disbelief.

“Dad?””

Richard stepped back.

“This is impossible.””

The voice answered:

“Not for you, Richard.””

I stared at the speaker.

My hands shook.

“You’re alive?””

“Yes.””

The word destroyed everything I thought I knew.

I looked at the walls.

The files.

The hidden rooms.

The lies.

“How?””

A pause.

“Because Richard needed everyone to believe I was gone.””

Richard’s face changed.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

My father laughed quietly.

“And you should have stopped.””

I felt anger replacing shock.

“You watched me.””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You watched me suffer.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

More than a lie.

“Why?””

The answer came slowly.

“Because I needed to know if you were strong enough.””

I felt sick.

“Strong enough for what?””

“For the truth.””

I looked at Richard.

At Marcus.

At everything my life had become.

“You turned my life into a test.””

“No.””

My father’s voice softened.

“I turned it into a chance.””

I shook my head.

“A chance?””

“To expose them.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You could have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“When you were a child.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I left clues.””

I looked around.

The files.

The photographs.

The documents.

All of it.

A lifetime of hidden messages.

“I didn’t understand.””

“I know.””

My voice broke.

“Because I was your son.””

Silence.

A painful silence.

Then my father said:

“Exactly.””

Richard suddenly moved toward the door.

“We need to leave.””

Nobody listened.

“Richard,” Marcus said.

“You’re done.””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

He pointed upward.

“You have no idea what’s happening.””

The voice interrupted.

“Richard.””

The older man stopped.

“You built the prison.””

A pause.

“But I built the trap.””

The underground lights turned red.

A hidden screen on the wall activated.

Footage appeared.

Security videos.

Years of recordings.

Claire entering the mansion.

Vanessa discovering the door.

Marcus searching files.

Me.

My entire life.

Watched.

Recorded.

Controlled.

Lily’s face appeared on one screen.

A recording from earlier that day.

My daughter walking through the hallway.

Finding the wall.

Finding the door.

I felt rage.

“You used my daughter.””

“No,” my father said.

“I protected her.””

“By watching her?””

“By making sure you finally found the truth.””

I stared at the screen.

Then at the locked door.

Then at Richard.

“You’re all monsters.””

Nobody argued.

Because maybe they all knew.

A loud mechanical sound came from above.

The hidden door began unlocking.

Richard looked toward it.

“Who is opening that?””

My father answered.

“Claire.””

Everyone froze.

The steel door upstairs.

The door that held my wife.

Was opening.

For three years, that door had separated us.

Now it was finally moving.

But before it fully unlocked, Claire’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel.””

I looked up.

“Yes?””

Her voice trembled.

“When I come out…”

A pause.

“You need to know something.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

Silence.

Then:

“I wasn’t the only person your father saved.””

The lock clicked.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

And from behind the opening door…

someone else stepped forward.
