Chapter 3: The Person Who Was Watching

The footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Not the sound of someone running to help.

The sound of someone who already knew what they were walking into.

I moved Lily behind me.

“Stay close,” I whispered.

She grabbed my hand.

“Daddy, is Mommy scared?””

I looked at the steel door.

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because I was scared too.

The footsteps stopped.

At the far end of the hallway, a shadow appeared.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“No…”

I turned toward her.

“You know who that is?””

She didn’t respond.

That was enough.

“Who?””

Her lips trembled.

“Daniel, you need to get Lily out of here.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t get to give orders anymore.””

The shadow moved closer.

The bright hallway lights revealed a man standing there.

Not a stranger.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been in our home many times.

My old friend Marcus.

He wore a dark jacket and held a phone in his hand.

“What is happening?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes went to the broken wall.

Then the steel door.

Then Vanessa.

“Daniel,” he said quietly.

“You weren’t supposed to find this.””

My entire body went cold.

“You knew?””

Marcus looked away.

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus, don’t.””

I turned between them.

“How many people knew?””

Neither answered.

That hurt more than anything.

I had spent three years searching alone.

But apparently, I was the only person in my own family who didn’t know the truth.

I walked toward Marcus.

“You were helping me search for Claire.””

“Yes.””

“You looked me in the eyes and told me you had no idea where she was.””

His face tightened.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

The words stopped me.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked toward Lily.

Then lowered his voice.

“It means you don’t understand what Claire was involved in.””

I heard movement behind the steel door.

Claire.

Listening.

“Don’t talk about me like I’m not here,” she said weakly.

Marcus froze.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Claire continued:

“Daniel deserves the truth.””

Vanessa stepped toward the door.

“No.””

I grabbed her arm.

She immediately pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

The anger in her voice shocked me.

Not fear.

Anger.

Like she was tired of hiding.

“I spent three years protecting you,” Vanessa said.

I stared at her.

“Protecting me from what?””

She looked at Claire’s door.

“From the reason she disappeared.””

The words hung in the air.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy…”

I bent down.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay.

I looked at the steel door.

“Claire.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

“Tell me the truth.””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then her voice came.

“I didn’t disappear.””

My heart stopped.

“I was taken.””

Lily gasped.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Marcus looked down.

I felt anger rise through every part of me.

“Taken by who?””

Claire’s breathing became uneven.

“I can’t tell you through this door.””

“Why?””

“Because they’re listening.””

Everyone looked toward the camera.

The small red light continued blinking.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel, you need to leave. Now.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I grabbed the lock again.

“My wife is behind this door.””

I looked at Lily.

“My daughter has spent years believing her mother abandoned her.””

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“And everyone here knew something except me.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Daniel…”

I pulled harder on the lock.

“I’m opening this door.””

Claire’s voice suddenly became urgent.

“No!””

I stopped.

“Why?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Because the person who locked me inside…”

A pause.

My hand tightened around the metal.

“...is standing right there with you.””

Everyone froze.

My eyes moved slowly.

To Marcus.

To Vanessa.

To the camera.

Then back to the hallway.

Because Claire had not said a name.

But someone in that room knew exactly who she meant.

May you like

And the terrified look on their face revealed one thing.

They knew Claire was telling the truth.
