Chapter 10: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The document trembled in my hand.

I read the name again.

Then again.

Like somehow the letters would rearrange themselves into something else.

They didn’t.

Marcus Carter.

My friend.

My brother in everything except blood.

The man who stood beside me when Claire disappeared.

The man who helped me search hospitals.

The man who sat with me on nights when I couldn’t sleep.

His name was on a document connected to Richard Hale’s secret operation.

“Daniel,” Marcus said quietly.

I looked at him.

“No.””

His expression tightened.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice echoed through the underground room.

“You don’t get to tell me to listen anymore.””

The recording device was still playing faint static on the table.

Claire’s voice had disappeared.

But the damage remained.

I held up the document.

“You signed this.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than if he had lied.

“Why?””

He looked away.

Richard watched him carefully.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

“Tell him,” Richard said.

Marcus glared at him.

“Don’t.””

Richard smiled.

“After everything you did, you still think you’re the victim?””

I stepped between them.

“What did you do?””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“Fix what?””

“The mistake.””

I felt anger rise.

“My entire life was a mistake?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Marcus looked at the files around us.

“I was investigating Richard before you ever met Claire.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He had been connected to missing people for years.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“Investigator. That’s what you call yourself?””

Marcus ignored him.

“I found records. Names. Payments. Property transfers.””

He pointed toward the walls.

“This house was part of it.””

I looked around.

The room suddenly felt even darker.

“So why was my name on that paper?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Because I needed access.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Richard trusted you.””

I felt sick.

“You used me.””

“No.””

“You used my relationship with Claire to get closer to him.””

Marcus’s silence answered.

I stepped back.

The betrayal felt heavier than anger.

Because anger was simple.

This was not.

This was realizing that every memory had another version I didn’t know.

“Our friendship,” I whispered.

Marcus looked at me.

“That was real.””

“Was it?””

His face broke.

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

Almost desperate.

I wanted to believe him.

That was the problem.

Richard walked toward the table.

“Daniel, you’re wasting time.””

I turned.

“You’re the one who created this.””

“No.””

He pointed at Marcus.

“He did.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Marcus looked toward the ceiling.

Toward where Claire was hidden.

Then back at me.

“I was the one who helped Claire disappear.””

The room stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“After she discovered what Richard was doing, she wanted to expose him.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

“Because she found out something worse.””

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She found out Richard wasn’t the only person involved.””

I looked at him.

“Who else?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“People inside law enforcement.””

The words hit hard.

“You’re saying she couldn’t trust anyone?””

“Yes.””

“So she trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“And you put her in that room?””

His face collapsed.

“I hid her there because I thought it was the only place Richard couldn’t reach.””

I looked toward the hidden chambers.

“The place where he eventually found her.””

Marcus looked down.

“I made a mistake.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A mistake?””

My voice shook.

“My wife spent three years locked away.””

“I know.””

“My daughter grew up without her mother.””

“I know.””

“I buried a woman who was still alive.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

The answer was worse than an excuse.

Because he truly knew.

Richard stepped closer.

“You see, Daniel?””

I turned.

“This is what happens when people believe they can control things they don’t understand.””

I stared at him.

“You’re not innocent.””

“No.””

Richard surprised me.

“I’m not.””

The honesty was unsettling.

“But I was trying to contain something bigger.””

Marcus scoffed.

“You always say that.””

Richard ignored him.

Then the lights flickered.

The speaker above us crackled.

Vanessa’s voice came through.

“Daniel!””

I moved toward it.

“Vanessa?””

“Get away from Marcus.””

Marcus looked up.

His face hardened.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

Her voice shook.

“I found the files.””

Everyone froze.

Richard looked toward the speaker.

“What files?””

“The original ones.””

A pause.

“The ones proving who started everything.””

I looked at Marcus.

Then Richard.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa said:

“Daniel…”

Her voice became softer.

“The person who planned your entire life wasn’t Richard.””

Richard’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

Vanessa continued.

“It was someone else.””

A sound came from the speaker.

A paper moving.

Then:

“And I know who.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Richard.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

May you like

“Your father.””

My heart stopped.
