Chapter 5: The Room Under The Room
The words made no sense.
A person built the room.
A person was watching us.
A person Vanessa recognized but refused to name.
I felt like I was standing inside a nightmare that had been waiting years for me to wake up.
“Who?”” I asked again.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who is watching my family?””
Her eyes moved to Lily.
And something in her expression changed.
Fear became determination.
“Daniel, take Lily upstairs.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice was calm now.
Too calm.
“I’m done leaving.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You need to listen.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
“Because whoever is watching us has access to this house.””
I looked around.
The perfect walls.
The expensive furniture.
The place where I raised my daughter.
The place where I thought my family was safe.
“How long?””
Marcus hesitated.
“How long what?””
“How long have you known someone was watching?””
He didn’t answer.
I already had my answer.
Lily pulled my sleeve.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
Her face was pale.
I hated that she was hearing all of this.
I hated that her childhood had become a mystery she never asked for.
I picked her up.
“Everything is going to be okay.””
She whispered:
“But Mommy said not to trust Vanessa.””
Vanessa flinched.
I looked at her.
“Why did Claire say that?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because she doesn’t know the whole story.””
A loud bang came from behind the steel door.
We all jumped.
“Claire!””
“I’m okay,” she called back.
But her voice sounded weaker.
Marcus rushed to the lock.
“We need to get her out.””
I stopped him.
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Why is the door locked from the outside?””
Silence.
Marcus looked away.
That was enough.
“You know.””
“No.””
“You know something.””
He rubbed his face.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
Marcus stared at the floor.
“The lock wasn’t designed to keep someone inside.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“It was designed to keep something out.””
I looked at the steel door.
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
“Then explain.””
Before he could answer, Vanessa spoke.
“There was another room.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“When I moved into this house, I found the door. But I also found documents.””
“What documents?””
She swallowed.
“Blueprints.””
My stomach tightened.
“For this room?””
She nodded.
“And another one.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You weren’t supposed to know about that.””
Vanessa looked at him angrily.
“I wasn’t supposed to know anything, apparently.””
The hallway filled with tension.
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What was in the blueprints?””
She looked at the steel door.
“A second chamber.””
“Where?””
She pointed downward.
My eyes dropped.
The floor.
“You mean below us?””
She nodded.
I felt a chill.
The mansion had a hidden room.
Now a hidden room beneath the hidden room.
How much of my own home had I never seen?
Claire suddenly spoke.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was urgent.
“You need to leave.””
I moved closer.
“I’m not leaving without you.””
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
“Daniel.””
Her voice cracked.
“Please.””
I stopped.
Because Claire had never sounded afraid.
Not once.
Not even when she disappeared.
“What happened?”” I asked.
A long silence.
Then:
“I found out something about Vanessa.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
“What?””
Claire continued.
“She wasn’t the person who put me here.””
Vanessa opened her eyes.
“But she knew who did.””
The accusation hung in the air.
I turned toward Vanessa.
She didn’t deny it.
That scared me more.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s face broke.
“Because if I told you the truth, you would have gone after them.””
“And?””
“And they would have killed you.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at her.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
Then toward the staircase.
Then finally whispered:
“My father.””
The hallway went cold.
I remembered Vanessa’s father.
The wealthy businessman who had attended our wedding.
The man who had smiled in family photos.
The man who disappeared from public life two years ago.
“You’re saying your father did this?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He built this house.””
Claire corrected her.
“No.””
May you like
Everyone turned.
“He built the prison.””
