Chapter 11: The Family Nobody Knew
The room became unbearable.
I stared at the speaker.
Waiting for Vanessa to say she was wrong.
Waiting for someone to laugh.
Waiting for anything that would make those words disappear.
But nobody did.
“My father?””
My voice barely came out.
Vanessa answered.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Because my father had died when I was young.
Because he was the one person in my life I believed was simple.
Good.
Safe.
Not part of this nightmare.
Richard looked at me differently now.
Not with control.
With pity.
That scared me more.
“What did my father have to do with this?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Marcus did.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
I was tired of hearing explanations from people who had hidden the truth.
“Tell me.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“Your father and Richard worked together.””
My stomach tightened.
“On what?””
“Research.””
I almost laughed.
“Research?””
Richard stepped forward.
“They were studying influence.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they wanted to know how people make decisions.””
I stared.
“And I was a test?””
Nobody spoke.
That was enough.
I felt something break inside me.
All those years.
My career.
My marriage.
My friendships.
My entire life.
Was I just a project?
A result?
A file?
Claire’s voice suddenly came through the speaker again.
“Daniel.””
I rushed toward it.
“Claire.””
“I’m sorry.””
The pain in her voice was real.
“You knew?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
“You knew my father was involved?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
“Daniel, listen—”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You all keep telling me to listen.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone had a reason.””
Richard.
Marcus.
Vanessa.
Claire.
Everyone.
Except me.
Claire whispered:
“I loved you.””
I looked toward the hidden speaker.
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“It’s the only answer that matters.””
I didn’t respond.
Because part of me believed her.
And that made everything worse.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Daniel, Claire found out your father wasn’t just involved.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
“She found out he tried to stop Richard.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Enough.””
Marcus ignored him.
“Your father realized what they were doing was wrong.””
I stared.
“My father tried to stop this?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
Marcus looked away.
“Because he disappeared before he could tell you.””
The room went quiet.
A memory surfaced.
A childhood moment.
My father standing in the garage.
A serious look on his face.
A sentence I never understood.
Sometimes the people who love you hide things because they think the truth will hurt you.
I had forgotten it.
Until now.
I looked at Richard.
“What happened to him?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“He made a choice.””
“What choice?””
“He betrayed the project.””
I stepped closer.
“And you punished him?””
Richard said nothing.
That was an answer.
My hands shook.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard looked at me.
“No.””
He pointed toward the speaker.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
Claire suddenly shouted:
“Daniel, don’t believe him!””
The urgency in her voice made me turn.
“What?””
“He’s trying to make you angry.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“She always did understand people.””
Claire continued:
“Daniel, there is one more thing you need to know.””
I froze.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who helped Richard rebuild this project after your father left…”
The speaker crackled.
I waited.
“Was Vanessa.””
Vanessa’s voice immediately cut through.
“No.””
Claire continued.
“She was younger. She didn’t understand.””
Vanessa started crying.
“Daniel, please.””
I looked at her.
My mind couldn’t process anything anymore.
She had lied.
She had hidden Claire.
She had protected me.
She had been connected to all of it.
Every answer created another question.
Then the underground door suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
The heavy metal door behind us locked.
Richard looked at it.
And for the first time…
He looked trapped.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then a new voice came through the speaker.
A voice none of us recognized.
“Richard.””
The older man looked toward the ceiling.
The fear on his face was immediate.
“Who is this?””
The voice laughed softly.
“After all these years, you still don’t recognize your own creation.””
The lights flickered.
The voice continued:
“Daniel Carter was never your experiment.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was mine.””
