Chapter 2: The Secret Lock

I didn’t know what scared me more.

The fact that Claire was alive.

Or the fact that Vanessa knew why she was behind that door.

My hand remained wrapped around the steel lock.

I could feel the cold metal pressing into my palm.

Lily was holding onto my shirt, crying into my chest.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“That was Mommy.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was still staring at Vanessa.

“Explain,” I said.

One word.

But it carried every question I had buried for three years.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more excuses.””

She took one step forward.

“Please listen to me.””

“Listen to you?”” I asked.

“My missing wife is behind a locked door in our house, and you want me to listen?””

Her face changed.

Pain.

Fear.

Regret.

But not surprise.

That was the part I couldn’t ignore.

She already knew.

Lily looked up at her.

“Why is Mommy in there?””

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to speak.

Then she looked away.

That silence answered more than words could.

I stepped between them.

“Stay away from her.””

Vanessa flinched.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“You’re right,” I said.

“I don’t.””

I pointed at the steel door.

“So help me understand.””

The lock suddenly rattled.

All three of us froze.

“Daniel…”

Claire’s voice came from inside.

This time it was clearer.

She sounded weak.

Exhausted.

But alive.

“Daniel, please.””

Lily immediately moved toward the door.

“Mommy!””

I caught her hand.

“Wait.””

“But Daddy—”

“Wait.””

I hated saying it.

Every part of me wanted to tear the door apart.

But something stopped me.

Claire’s warning.

Don’t let Vanessa open it.

Not me.

Not anyone.

Vanessa.

I looked at the lock.

Then at Vanessa.

“What did she mean?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t hurt her.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Because I never accused her of hurting Claire.

Not yet.

“You never said you did,” I replied.

Her face went pale.

The hallway became unbearably quiet.

Vanessa realized her mistake.

And so did I.

“You knew,” I whispered.

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You knew she was here.””

“No.””

“You knew about this room.””

Her silence answered.

I stepped closer.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Daniel…”

“How long have you known?””

She finally looked at me.

“Since before we got married.””

The words hit harder than any physical blow.

Lily started crying again.

I barely heard her.

Before we got married.

Three years of searching.

Three years of pain.

Three years of wondering if Claire was dead somewhere.

And Vanessa had been living beside me with the truth.

“How?”” I asked.

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“I found the door when I moved in.””

“And?””

“And I didn’t know what was inside.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because nothing made sense.

“You found a hidden steel door in my house and decided not to tell me?””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Then she whispered:

“Of what Claire would say.””

The lock moved again.

A weak sound came from behind the steel.

“Daniel…”

Claire coughed.

“I tried to tell you.””

I moved closer.

“Claire, what happened?””

There was a pause.

Then:

“Vanessa knows.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Stop.””

Claire continued.

“She knows why I’m here.””

Lily covered her mouth.

I stared at Vanessa.

The woman I had trusted.

The woman who helped raise my daughter.

The woman who had slept beside me every night.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Is it true?””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By hiding my wife in a wall?””

“I didn’t put her there!””

Her sudden shout filled the hallway.

Lily jumped.

Vanessa immediately covered her mouth.

She looked horrified.

Not because she yelled.

Because she had revealed too much.

I stepped closer.

“Then who did?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the steel door.

And before she could answer, something happened.

The lights above us flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the hallway camera near the ceiling turned toward us.

I stared at it.

A small red light blinked.

Someone was watching.

Vanessa saw it too.

Her expression changed instantly.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

She whispered:

“We’re not alone.””

A sound came from the end of the hallway.

A slow footstep.

Then another.

May you like

Someone was walking toward us.

And Vanessa looked more terrified of that person than she looked of the hidden door.
