Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden Below

The footsteps grew louder.

Richard stood perfectly still.

That was what bothered me.

A man like him didn’t panic.

He planned.

He calculated.

So if something had changed, it meant something had gone wrong.

Marcus noticed it too.

“You didn’t call them to help you.””

Richard looked at him.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

The sound came closer.

Voices.

Multiple voices.

I moved Lily behind me.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel, whatever happens, don’t let them take Lily.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Her eyes were fixed on the hallway.

“Promise me.””

The fear in her voice was different.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for my daughter.

“I promise.””

Richard heard.

He smiled sadly.

“That’s why Claire chose you.””

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the hallway doors opened.

Three people entered.

Not police.

Not security.

Men wearing dark clothing.

Professional.

Silent.

One of them looked at Richard.

“Mr. Hale.””

Richard nodded.

“Take care of the situation.””

My heart dropped.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel, get Lily away.””

The man nearest us moved.

I reacted before thinking.

I grabbed a heavy wooden chair beside the hallway table and pushed it between us.

The man stopped.

Not because he was scared.

Because he was surprised.

I wasn’t going to stand there and let anyone touch my daughter.

Vanessa moved beside me.

“I’m done following you.””

Richard looked at her.

“You have no idea what you’re choosing.””

“I know exactly.””

The man closest to Richard leaned toward him.

“Sir?””

Richard watched his daughter carefully.

Then he said:

“Leave her.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked shocked.

Richard continued:

“But take the others.””

My stomach dropped.

“Others?””

He pointed toward the steel door.

“Open the lower chamber.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Marcus.

“What lower chamber?””

Marcus swallowed.

“The room under the room.””

Richard smiled.

“Now you’re ready to see the truth.””

A hidden panel in the floor near the steel door opened.

I stared.

Another secret.

Another thing hidden inside my own home.

A staircase descended into darkness.

I couldn’t believe it.

This wasn’t a mansion.

It was a maze.

Richard looked at me.

“Come with me.””

“No.””

“You want answers.””

I looked at Claire’s door.

“I want my wife.””

Richard nodded.

“Then you need to see why she was locked away.””

I hated that he sounded confident.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

I looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

“Don’t go.””

Richard turned toward her.

“Still protecting him?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely disappointed.

“You were always weak.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I was always afraid.””

A pause.

“But I’m not anymore.””

Something passed between them.

A lifetime of pain.

A father and daughter who had both lost something.

Richard turned away.

“Bring Daniel.””

The men moved.

Marcus stepped in front of me.

“No.””

One of the men grabbed him.

The struggle was quick.

Too quick.

Marcus fell to the floor.

I rushed forward.

But Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

Because Lily was behind me.

Because Claire was still trapped.

Because fighting blindly would only get us hurt.

Richard started down the stairs.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“If you want the truth, follow me.””

I didn’t move.

Then Claire spoke.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was quiet.

“Go.””

I froze.

“Claire?””

“Find out what happened.””

“What about you?””

A pause.

“Because I think the answer is down there.””

I looked at the staircase.

Then at Lily.

Then at Vanessa.

Something inside me knew this was the moment everything changed.

I followed Richard down.

The underground chamber smelled like old metal and dust.

The walls were concrete.

No windows.

No warmth.

At the bottom was another door.

Richard opened it.

Inside was a room filled with files.

Photos.

Recordings.

Documents.

And on the center table was something that made me stop breathing.

A picture.

Of me.

Taken years before I met Vanessa.

Richard watched my reaction.

“You were never chosen by accident.””

I stared at the photograph.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Your entire relationship with Claire was connected to this.””

My hands shook.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard pointed toward the files.

“Look.””

I opened the nearest folder.

Inside were documents.

My name.

Claire’s name.

Vanessa’s name.

All connected.

And on the first page was a date.

A date from before my wedding.

Before Lily.

Before I knew any of these people.

At the bottom was a sentence that made my blood freeze.

*Subject Daniel Carter was successfully introduced into the Hale family network.*

I looked up.

“What did you do?””

Richard smiled.

Then the lights in the underground room flickered.

And from somewhere behind the wall…

I heard Claire’s voice.

Not through the steel door.

Through the room itself.

“Daniel…”

May you like

I turned.

“She’s not the only one who was trapped.””
