Chapter 4: The Name Nobody Wanted To Say
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The hallway that had once felt like the center of our home now felt like a trap.
The hidden steel door behind me.
The camera watching above us.
The three people standing in front of me, each carrying pieces of a truth I had spent three years searching for.
And Claire’s voice still echoed in my mind.
The person who locked me inside is standing right there with you.
Lily squeezed my hand.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
“Who hurt Mommy?””
I looked down at her.
Her eyes were full of fear.
Six years old.
Too young to understand secrets.
Too young to know that sometimes the people closest to you are the ones hiding the darkest things.
“I don’t know yet,” I said softly.
But I did know one thing.
Someone had lied to me.
Someone had watched me break apart.
Someone had let me believe my wife was gone forever.
I turned toward Marcus.
“Was it you?””
His face changed immediately.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Daniel—”
“Answer me.””
He looked at the floor.
That was the first time I saw guilt on his face.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Guilt.
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Stop.””
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“No. Not everything.””
“But enough.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Enough to know you were in danger.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that. Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed around the hallway.
“Danger. Protection. Keeping me safe.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody thought I deserved the truth.””
Behind the steel door, Claire spoke.
“Daniel…”
I turned immediately.
“Are you hurt?””
A pause.
“I’m okay.””
I almost broke at those words.
Three years.
Three years wondering if she was alive.
Three years imagining every possible nightmare.
And now she was only a few feet away.
But I still couldn’t reach her.
“Who locked you inside?””
Silence.
Then Claire answered.
“Marcus didn’t.””
Marcus looked up.
Everyone turned toward her voice.
“What?”” I asked.
Claire continued.
“He helped me survive.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Like he had been waiting years for that sentence.
I stared at him.
“You helped her?””
He nodded slowly.
“I found her the night she disappeared.””
My breathing changed.
“You knew she was alive?””
“Yes.””
The answer cut deeper than I expected.
“You knew.””
“I did.””
“You knew I was looking for her.””
“I know.””
“You watched me fall apart.””
Marcus swallowed.
“I watched you stay alive.””
I stepped toward him.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
“I know.””
The way he said it made my anger hesitate.
Because he wasn’t defending himself.
He looked broken.
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus was the one who found the room.””
I turned.
“What room?””
She looked at the steel door.
“This room.””
I stared at her.
“You said you found the door when you moved in.””
“I did.””
“Then why does Marcus know?””
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“Because he was here before me.””
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
I looked at Marcus.
“What is this house?””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
Finally, he spoke.
“This house belonged to Claire’s family.””
I froze.
“What?””
Claire’s voice came from behind the door.
“My father built this place.””
I turned toward the steel.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought it was over.””
Her voice became quieter.
“But I was wrong.””
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A sharp electronic beep.
Everyone looked up.
The camera above us flashed.
Marcus immediately changed.
“Get away from the door.””
“What?””
“Daniel, move!””
His urgency scared me more than anything he had said.
He grabbed his phone.
The screen showed a live feed of the hallway.
But not from the camera above us.
Another camera.
Another angle.
Someone else was watching.
“Who is that?”” I asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he was staring at the screen.
His face drained of color.
I moved closer.
“What?””
He slowly turned the phone toward me.
On the screen was another part of the mansion.
A dark room.
A desk.
And sitting in front of another monitor was a person watching us.
A person whose face was hidden.
But their hand rested beside the screen.
A hand I recognized.
Because of the ring.
Vanessa saw it.
And she stopped breathing.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“You know that ring?””
She stepped backward.
“No.””
But her voice said yes.
I grabbed the phone.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa looked at the steel door.
Then at Marcus.
Then at me.
And finally whispered:
“Daniel…”
May you like
Her voice trembled.
“That’s the person who built this room.””
