Chapter 10: The Daughter of a Hidden Secret

Nia felt every pair of eyes in the room turn toward her.

The hidden office suddenly became smaller.

The walls felt closer.

The air felt heavier.

Marcus stared at her.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

With confusion.

“What does that mean?””

Nia looked at the black computer screen.

The message remained burned into everyone’s mind.

Ask Nia who her father really was.

She had spent years preparing herself for questions.

But never this one.

“My father is dead.””

Her voice was quiet.

Marcus stepped closer.

“How do you know?””

Nia looked at him.

“Because my mother told me.””

Renee studied her face.

“Who was your father?””

Nia looked away.

A memory appeared in her mind.

A small apartment.

Her mother sitting at the kitchen table.

An old photograph hidden beneath a stack of bills.

A warning repeated over and over.

Never ask about him.

Never say his name.

Never let them find you.

“My mother never talked about him.””

Marcus frowned.

“But someone knows.””

Nia looked at the computer.

The message was not random.

Someone wanted her exposed.

“Whoever made that video knew something.””

Andre walked toward her.

“Your mother worked for Elena.””

Nia nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Elena trusted her.””

“Yes.””

Andre’s expression changed.

“Then maybe your mother knew more than she told you.””

Nia’s jaw tightened.

“My mother protected me.””

Marcus noticed the anger in her voice.

Not defensive.

Personal.

He softened.

“I’m sorry.””

Nia looked at him.

“For what?””

“For making you answer questions you should never have had to answer.””

The apology surprised her.

For years, she imagined meeting Marcus Whitmore.

The powerful man connected to Elena.

She expected arrogance.

Distance.

Instead, she saw someone who looked just as lost as she felt.

Renee opened the folder again.

“There has to be something else.””

Andre looked at the video.

“My father knew about Nia.””

Marcus turned.

“How?””

Andre shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I might.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You have another secret?””

Vanessa ignored the accusation.

“Your father was obsessed with bloodlines.””

Nia frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“He believed family was the only thing that mattered.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“My father believed power mattered.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He believed the Whitmore name had to survive.””

Renee’s face changed.

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because he knew someone would eventually expose him.””

Marcus stared.

“So he built protection.””

“Yes.””

“And Nia?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“She may be part of that protection.””

Nia stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She looked angry.

“My entire life, people have treated me like I was carrying someone else’s secrets.””

Her voice shook.

“I don’t know anything about your family.””

Marcus watched her.

“But you know about the necklace.””

Nia touched the pendant.

“The necklace belonged to Elena.””

“Yes.””

“My mother gave me the photograph.””

“Yes.””

“Because she trusted Elena.””

Marcus nodded.

“So why would my father mention you?””

Nia had no answer.

Then she remembered something.

A small detail.

Something she had ignored.

Something her mother said years ago.

“My mother had a box.””

Everyone looked at her.

“A box?””

Nia nodded.

“She kept things from Elena.””

Renee stepped forward.

“Where is it?””

Nia hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus frowned.

“You don’t know?””

“My mother hid it.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at her.

“What did she tell you?””

Nia closed her eyes.

“She said if anyone ever came looking for the box…”

She swallowed.

“I should give it to Elena.””

Andre looked at Marcus.

“But Elena was gone.””

Nia nodded.

“That’s why I never opened it.””

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus asked:

“Where is it?””

Nia looked down.

“At my house.””

Marcus immediately grabbed his coat.

“Take us there.””

Vanessa stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because if someone is watching us, that’s exactly where they want us to go.””

Andre nodded slowly.

“She’s right.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“You agree with her?””

“I agree with the danger.””

Renee looked around the room.

“We’re missing something.””

“What?””

“The message.””

Everyone looked back at the computer.

Ask Nia who her father really was.

Renee whispered:

“That wasn’t a question.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“It was a warning.””

The room went quiet.

Renee pointed at the screen.

“Someone wanted us to know Nia’s connection before we found it ourselves.””

Nia felt a chill.

“Why?””

Before anyone answered, the computer made a sound.

A new file appeared.

No title.

Just a date.

The date of Elena’s disappearance.

Marcus clicked it.

A photograph appeared.

Everyone leaned closer.

It showed Elena.

Alive.

Standing beside someone.

Someone Marcus recognized immediately.

His face changed.

“No.””

Andre looked.

Then froze.

Because the person beside Elena was not Vanessa.

Not David.

Not their father.

It was Claire Brooks.

Nia’s mother.

But Claire was not working for Elena.

She was holding a gun.

Pointed directly at her.

Nia stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

The room filled with silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Now you understand.””

Nia looked at the photograph.

And for the first time that night…

May you like

She wondered if the woman who raised her had been protecting her.

Or hiding from her.
