Chapter 14: The Brother’s Final Confession
Marcus did not look at his father.
He looked at Andre.
The man who had spent twelve years searching.
The man who claimed he saved Elena.
The man who still had secrets.
“What did you do?””
Andre’s face changed.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice was exhausted.
“I’m done being protected.””
The room went silent.
Andre looked at his father.
Then back at Marcus.
“I made a mistake.””
His father smiled.
“A beautiful understatement.””
Marcus ignored him.
“What mistake?””
Andre swallowed.
“The night Elena disappeared…”
Everyone waited.
“I helped her leave.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“No.””
Andre shook his head.
“You don’t.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“Then tell me.””
Andre looked at the floor.
“Elena didn’t trust anyone.””
“Why?””
“Because she discovered our father was alive.””
Marcus froze.
“But you knew.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Andre’s voice dropped.
“Before the funeral.””
The answer hit hard.
Marcus stepped back.
“You knew my father was alive before we buried him?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe he was dead?””
Andre looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed around the room.
“Everyone says they lied because they were protecting me.””
His voice cracked.
“But nobody ever asked what I wanted.””
Nobody answered.
Andre nodded.
“You’re right.””
The admission surprised Marcus.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“But Elena begged me not to.””
Marcus looked up.
“Why?””
Andre looked at his father.
“Because she knew he would come after you.””
His father smiled.
“She was right.””
Marcus turned.
“What did you do to her?””
The old man didn’t answer.
Andre did.
“I helped Elena disappear.””
Marcus waited.
“Then I helped her hide.””
“Where?””
Andre shook his head.
“I can’t tell you.””
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
“Because if he knows…”
He looked at his father.
“…she dies.””
The room went still.
His father’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Marcus saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
For the first time.
“You don’t control everything.””
His father smiled.
“Don’t I?””
The computer suddenly turned on.
A message appeared.
*LOCATION SENT.*
Everyone looked.
Andre stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus saw the fear on his face.
“What is it?””
Andre whispered:
“She moved.””
“Who?””
“Elena.””
The screen showed coordinates.
A location.
A place.
Marcus looked at his father.
“You know where she is.””
His father said nothing.
Marcus walked toward him.
“You always knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me suffer?””
His father looked at him.
“Suffering creates strength.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the man who raised him.
“It creates monsters.””
For the first time, his father looked angry.
“You think you’re better than me?””
Marcus answered immediately.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Because it was the first time Marcus had ever said it.
His father stared.
Then laughed.
“You really are Elena’s husband.””
Marcus turned toward the door.
“I’m finding her.””
His father stepped forward.
“You won’t.””
“Why?””
“Because she never wanted you to find her.””
Marcus stopped.
The words hurt.
But he kept walking.
Then his father said:
“Ask Nia why Elena chose her.””
Marcus turned.
Nia froze.
Again.
Everyone looked at her.
His father smiled.
“Your mother wasn’t just Elena’s helper.””
Nia’s face changed.
“What are you saying?””
He looked directly at her.
“She was Elena’s sister.””
The room went silent.
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus looked at Renee.
Renee’s expression had changed.
She knew.
“You knew.””
Renee looked away.
Nia stepped back.
“My mother…”
Her voice broke.
“My mother never told me.””
Her father’s voice echoed.
“Because Elena made her promise.””
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
The old man smiled.
“Because Elena knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
He looked at Nia.
“That Claire’s daughter was the only person who could expose me.””
Nia froze.
The computer suddenly made a sound.
A new message appeared.
From Elena.
One sentence.
*Marcus, bring Nia. She deserves to know who she really is.*
Marcus looked at Nia.
Then at the man who had destroyed his family.
Then at the door.
For fifteen years, he had searched for the truth.
Now the truth was waiting.
May you like
And it involved the one person nobody expected.
Nia.
