Chapter 11: The Woman Who Held the Gun

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The photograph sat on the desk between them.

A frozen moment.

A moment that changed everything.

Nia stared at her mother’s face.

She knew every expression.

Every smile.

Every scar.

Every tired line around her eyes.

But she had never seen this woman.

The woman holding a gun.

The woman standing beside Elena on the night she disappeared.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

Marcus looked at her.

“Nia.””

She shook her head.

“That isn’t my mother.””

Renee picked up the photograph carefully.

“It is.””

Nia looked at her.

“You don’t know her.””

Renee’s expression softened.

“No.””

She looked at the picture.

“But I knew Elena.””

Marcus stared.

“What happened that night?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

Marcus immediately became guarded.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I saw part of it.””

Nia stepped forward.

“You saw my mother with a gun?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Yes.””

Nia’s face changed.

“And you said nothing?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

The words made Nia laugh.

A painful laugh.

“Protecting me?””

She pointed at the photograph.

“You let me believe my mother was innocent.””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“Because I believed she was.””

Marcus frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I didn’t see the whole thing.””

Andre crossed his arms.

“What did you see?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Elena and Claire arguing.””

Marcus listened.

“What about?””

“Your father.””

The room went still.

Vanessa continued.

“Elena was furious. She said Claire had lied to her.””

Nia whispered:

“My mother wouldn’t.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You don’t know that.””

Nia’s eyes filled.

“Yes, I do.””

Marcus watched her.

He understood that pain.

The pain of realizing the people you loved might have hidden pieces of themselves.

Vanessa continued.

“Claire had something Elena wanted.””

“What?””

“A document.””

Renee looked at the folder.

“Proof.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Elena thought Claire took it.””

Nia shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“The gun.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Claire brought it.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

A silence followed.

Then Nia spoke.

“My mother hated violence.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“People change when they are desperate.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded true.

Marcus walked toward the desk.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked.

He pointed at the photograph.

“Look at the background.””

Andre leaned closer.

Behind Elena and Claire was a building.

An old warehouse.

Renee recognized it.

“That’s one of your father’s properties.””

Marcus froze.

“Which one?””

Renee looked at the image.

“The old Whitmore storage facility.””

Andre’s face changed.

“That building burned down.””

Marcus turned.

“When?””

“The night Elena disappeared.””

The room went silent.

Nia stared.

“You mean everyone thought Elena died there?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“But no body was found.””

Andre looked at him.

“Because she wasn’t there.””

Renee looked at the photograph again.

“Then Claire wasn’t attacking her.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Renee pointed.

“Look closer.””

Marcus took the photograph.

Claire’s hand.

The gun.

The angle.

“She’s not aiming at Elena.””

Nia stepped closer.

The photograph was blurry.

But then she saw it.

The gun was pointed behind Elena.

At someone else.

A shadow in the doorway.

Someone standing there.

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

“Who is that?””

Nobody knew.

Then the computer screen turned on again.

Another file.

A video.

Created the same night.

Marcus clicked.

The footage was dark.

Security footage.

A warehouse hallway.

A woman walked into view.

Elena.

Then Claire.

Then a third person.

The person from the shadow.

The camera zoomed.

Marcus froze.

Because he knew that face.

Everyone knew that face.

Nia covered her mouth.

“No.””

The person on the screen was David Cross.

But that was impossible.

David had claimed he was searching for Elena.

The footage continued.

David walked toward them.

Claire raised the gun.

Elena stepped between them.

Then David said something.

The audio was damaged.

Marcus increased the volume.

Static.

Then one clear sentence.

“You should have listened to your father.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Andre whispered:

“My father.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Andre stared at the screen.

“He was there.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Then the hidden office door unlocked.

But nobody touched it.

A piece of paper slid underneath.

Marcus picked it up.

Only one sentence was written.

*Claire Brooks was protecting Elena from the real killer.*

Nia stared at the message.

Her entire life changed in one night.

Her mother was not the villain.

But if that was true…

Who was she protecting Elena from?
