Chapter 12: The Truth Buried Beneath the Family Name
The note remained in Marcus’s hand.
Claire Brooks was protecting Elena from the real killer.
For years, Marcus had searched for answers.
He thought the truth would bring peace.
Instead, it brought more questions.
Nia looked at the photograph again.
Her mother.
The gun.
The warehouse.
The man behind them.
David.
Everything she believed about her family had shifted.
“My mother tried to save her.””
Her voice was barely audible.
Marcus looked at her.
“I think so.””
Nia looked angry.
“I spent my whole life thinking she abandoned me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew there was nothing to say.
Marcus understood regret.
He carried twelve years of it.
Renee picked up the note.
“This was left for us.””
Andre looked around the room.
“By who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the note.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
“You knew.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
“You recognized that handwriting.””
She stayed silent.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
Her expression broke.
“I knew Claire wasn’t the enemy.””
Nia’s face hardened.
“And you let me believe she was?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I didn’t know how to fix it.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked down.
“It isn’t.””
Marcus stared.
“How much do you know?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Enough to know Elena survived.””
The room froze.
Nia whispered:
“You knew she was alive?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew?””
“I found out years ago.””
“And you said nothing?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was afraid.””
“Of Elena?””
“No.””
She looked toward the hidden door.
“Of the person who was watching her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I don’t expect anything from you anymore.””
The honesty surprised him.
She continued.
“After Elena disappeared, I found a message she left.””
Marcus stared.
“What message?””
Vanessa reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small piece of paper.
“I kept it because I was scared.””
Marcus took it.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
Again.
*Vanessa,*
*If you are reading this, you know the truth.*
Marcus read the next line.
*You were never my enemy. But you were never strong enough to fight him.*
Vanessa looked away.
Nia frowned.
“Him?””
Marcus continued.
The next words were clear.
*David is not the person controlling everything.*
Marcus looked at Andre.
Then Vanessa.
The message continued.
*The person above David is someone we all trust.*
The paper ended there.
Marcus lowered it.
“Someone we trust.””
Renee looked around.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then the office speakers turned on.
A voice filled the room.
A voice they had heard before.
David.
“Congratulations.””
Everyone froze.
The speaker continued.
“You finally found the pieces.””
Marcus looked around.
“Where are you?””
A quiet laugh.
“You always were impatient.””
Andre stepped toward the speaker.
“David.””
The voice paused.
“Andre.””
A cold silence followed.
“I wondered when you would stop pretending.””
Andre’s face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What does that mean?””
David continued.
“You were never the loyal brother.””
Andre clenched his jaw.
“Don’t.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
David laughed.
“You still don’t know?””
The speaker crackled.
“Your brother has spent twelve years hiding the truth.””
Andre looked at Marcus.
“Don’t listen to him.””
David continued.
“He knows what happened to Elena.””
Marcus turned.
“Andre?””
Andre said nothing.
That silence answered enough.
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
Andre looked at him.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
“Were you there?””
Andre closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“Did you help her?””
“Yes.””
Nia looked shocked.
Marcus stared.
“You helped Elena disappear?””
Andre nodded.
“I saved her.””
The room went silent.
Marcus whispered:
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Andre looked broken.
“Because Elena made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
Andre looked at the speaker.
“To protect you.””
David interrupted.
“How noble.””
Marcus looked at the speaker.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then David answered.
“I want you to stop looking for a villain outside your family.””
Marcus felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
The speaker crackled.
“It means the person who destroyed everything was never hiding.””
The lights flickered.
The computer screen turned on.
A final video appeared.
A live feed.
A woman sitting in a room.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Elena.
Marcus stopped breathing.
“Elena.””
Her eyes looked directly into the camera.
“Marcus.””
He stepped closer.
The tears came before he could stop them.
“You’re alive.””
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her expression changed.
Pain.
Fear.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
Marcus stared.
Elena whispered:
“The person you trusted most…”
The video glitched.
Static covered her face.
Then her final words came through.
“…is standing in that room with you.””
The screen went black.
Everyone slowly looked around.
Marcus.
Vanessa.
Andre.
Renee.
Nia.
And then the hidden office door opened.
A figure stood outside.
Someone none of them expected.
Someone who should not have been there.
Someone Marcus had not seen in fifteen years.
May you like
His father.
Alive.
