Chapter 13: The Father Who Never Died
Nobody moved.
The figure standing in the doorway looked impossible.
For fifteen years, Marcus had carried the image of his father in his mind.
The funeral.
The closed coffin.
The final goodbye.
The stories people told him.
But the man standing there was not a memory.
He was breathing.
Watching.
Smiling.
“Hello, Marcus.””
The voice was older.
Rougher.
But unmistakable.
Marcus stepped backward.
“No.””
His father tilted his head.
“You always struggled with accepting things you didn’t want to believe.””
Andre moved in front of Marcus.
“Stay away from him.””
The old man smiled.
“Still protecting your brother?””
Marcus looked at Andre.
Then back at the man.
“Who are you?””
The question sounded impossible.
The man laughed softly.
“You know exactly who I am.””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice cracked.
“My father is dead.””
The man walked into the room.
The lights above flickered.
Every step felt like a nightmare becoming real.
“Your father died.””
He stopped.
“But your father was never buried.””
Renee stared.
“You faked your death.””
The man looked at her.
“I survived.””
Andre’s expression turned cold.
“You planned everything.””
The man looked at his son.
“Careful.””
Marcus noticed the tension.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Anger.
Andre had known.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew.””
Andre didn’t answer.
“Didn’t you?””
Andre lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
The betrayal hurt worse than the truth.
Marcus turned away.
“My whole life…”
His voice shook.
“My entire family knew things I didn’t.””
His father watched him.
“That was intentional.””
Marcus looked back.
“What?””
“You were always too emotional.””
The words cut deeper than any insult.
“You cared about people.””
His father looked at the documents.
“At this level, compassion is a weakness.””
Marcus stared.
“That’s what you believe?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
“And that is why Elena was dangerous.””
Marcus froze.
“You admit it?””
His father smiled.
“Elena was brilliant.””
A pause.
“But she loved you.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“And that was a problem?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“Because she made you weak.””
Nia looked disgusted.
“You destroyed your own family because someone loved him?””
His father looked at her.
“You don’t understand family.””
Nia stepped forward.
“No.””
Her voice was steady.
“I understand it better than you.””
The old man studied her.
Then smiled.
“You’re Claire’s daughter.””
Nia froze.
Marcus noticed.
“You know her?””
His father looked at Nia.
“Of course.””
Nia’s face hardened.
“My mother hated you.””
The man laughed.
“She was afraid of me.””
“She protected Elena from you.””
The smile disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But everyone saw.
Marcus saw.
The first crack.
His father turned toward Vanessa.
“You failed.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus looked at her.
“You worked with him?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I was trapped.””
His father laughed.
“Everyone says that when they lose.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You threatened my family.””
“You agreed.””
“I was trying to survive.””
Marcus watched them.
Two people who had both lied.
Two people who had both been controlled.
But only one person in the room seemed to enjoy it.
His father.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Where is Elena?””
His father looked at him.
“Still asking about her.””
“She’s alive.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
His father smiled.
“You’ll never understand what she sacrificed.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“Tell me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re still not ready.””
Marcus laughed.
“After everything you did, you think you get to decide what I’m ready for?””
His father looked at him.
“You still sound like your mother.””
The sentence changed the room.
Marcus froze.
“My mother?””
His father said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
“What does my mother have to do with this?””
Andre looked away.
Renee noticed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He looked at his father.
“Answer me.””
The old man sighed.
“Your mother knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That I was alive.””
Marcus felt sick.
“No.””
“Yes.””
His father walked toward the desk.
“She helped me disappear.””
The room exploded into silence.
Marcus shook his head.
“My mother would never.””
“She did.””
“Why?””
His father looked at him.
“Because she understood what Elena refused to accept.””
“What?””
“That power has a cost.””
Marcus stared.
The man continued.
“Elena wanted justice.””
He smiled.
“She didn’t understand that justice destroys families.””
Nia looked at him.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She was staring at the old photograph.
The one with Claire.
“The photograph.””
Marcus looked.
Nia pointed.
“Your father is missing from it.””
Everyone became still.
She continued.
“He was there.””
Marcus looked confused.
“How do you know?””
“Because he said he survived.””
Nia pointed at the picture.
“But if he was there, why wasn’t he photographed?””
Renee stepped closer.
The realization came slowly.
“Because someone removed him.””
Marcus looked at his father.
“You edited evidence.””
His father smiled.
“Now you’re thinking.””
The room felt colder.
Marcus understood.
The photographs.
The documents.
The lies.
Everything had been controlled.
His father walked toward the door.
“Come with me.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“You want Elena.””
“Yes.””
“Then come.””
Nobody spoke.
Andre grabbed Marcus’s arm.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
Andre whispered:
“Because wherever he takes you…”
He looked at his father.
“…someone always disappears.””
The old man smiled.
“Your brother still thinks he can save you.””
Marcus looked between them.
Then his father said:
“But he never told you what he did to Elena.””
Marcus turned.
Andre froze.

The room went silent.
And Marcus realized there was still one secret nobody had confessed.
