Chapter 8: The Brother Who Came Back
Andre stood in the doorway.
Older.
Grayer.
But still wearing the same confident expression Marcus remembered.
The expression of a man who always believed he was in control.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Marcus stepped forward.
“You.””
Andre looked around the room.
At the documents.
The photographs.
The open folder.
Then his eyes landed on Vanessa.
“You told him.””
It was not a question.
Vanessa said nothing.
Andre sighed.
“I knew this day would come.””
Marcus stared.
“You knew?””
Andre walked inside.
The door closed behind him.
“You were always going to find out.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You disappeared for twelve years and that’s all you have to say?””
Andre looked at him.
“I didn’t disappear.””
“You left.””
“I was protecting myself.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“From what?””
Andre looked at the photograph.
“From the truth.””
Renee moved between them.
“You were there the night Elena vanished.””
Andre looked at her.
“Yes.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“You admit it?””
Andre nodded.
“I was there.””
The honesty was almost worse than a lie.
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“What happened?””
Andre looked at Vanessa.
Then at Nia.
Then back at Marcus.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
Andre took a breath.
“Elena found out about the money.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
Andre shook his head.
“You don’t.””
He walked toward the desk.
“She didn’t just discover the theft.””
He pointed at the documents.
“She discovered who was behind it.””
Marcus watched him.
“David.””
Andre smiled sadly.
“You still don’t understand.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then Andre.
“Then explain.””
Andre looked at the old photograph.
“David was working for someone else.””
Renee’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Andre looked at Marcus.
The answer came slowly.
“Your father.””
Marcus froze.
“My father is dead.””
“Yes.””
Andre nodded.
“But his empire didn’t die with him.””
The statement changed everything.
Marcus stared.
“What are you saying?””
Andre sat down.
“Your father built more than a company. He built a system.””
Marcus felt sick.
“He was gone before Elena disappeared.””
Andre nodded.
“Exactly.””
Nia looked confused.
“How can someone who was dead be controlling anything?””
Andre looked at her.
“Because people like your father don’t disappear. They leave people behind to continue their work.””
Marcus remembered.
The warnings.
The secrets.
The family meetings where nobody spoke openly.
His father’s obsession with reputation.
Andre continued.
“Elena discovered our father had hidden accounts. Illegal accounts.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You expect me to believe Elena knew this and never told me?””
Andre looked at him.
“She tried.””
The room went silent.
Marcus whispered:
“When?””
Andre looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus saw it.
“You know.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Vanessa.””
She finally spoke.
“The night before Elena disappeared.””
Marcus stared.
“She came to me.””
The words hurt.
“She asked me to help.””
Nia looked shocked.
“And you didn’t?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was scared.””
Andre stood.
“You were more than scared.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Don’t.””
Marcus turned.
“What does that mean?””
Andre looked between them.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
Andre pointed at Vanessa.
“She made a deal.””
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
“With who?””
Andre’s answer was quiet.
“With your father’s people.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You don’t know what happened.””
Andre laughed.
“Neither do you.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You made a deal?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why aren’t you denying it?””
Her silence was enough.
Marcus stepped away.
His entire marriage.
His entire life.
Everything he thought he knew.
Gone.
Nia looked at Andre.
“Why are you telling us this?””
Andre looked at her.
“Because I’m tired.””
“Of what?””
“Running.””
Marcus stared.
“Where were you?””
Andre looked at him.
“Trying to find Elena.””
Marcus laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Andre reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording.
He placed it on the desk.
“Because Elena gave me this before she disappeared.””
Marcus froze.
“Why would she trust you?””
Andre looked at him.
“Because she knew I wasn’t the one who betrayed her.””
Everyone went silent.
Andre pressed play.
Elena’s voice filled the room.
“Marcus, if Andre found you, listen carefully.””
Marcus held his breath.
The recording continued.
“I was wrong about Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
Elena’s voice continued.
“She wasn’t the person I should have feared.””
Marcus stared.
The room felt like it stopped moving.
Then Elena said:
“The person who destroyed our family…”
A pause.
Then:
“…was someone who shares your blood.””
Marcus looked at Andre.
Andre looked back.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Nia noticed something.
A second file on the device.
Created the same day.
She pointed.
“There’s another recording.””
Andre looked surprised.
“I didn’t know.””
Marcus pressed play.
Static.
Then a man’s voice.
A voice they had never heard before.
“Marcus Whitmore.””
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
“You have been searching for the wrong person.””
A pause.
Then the man said:
“The woman you think betrayed you is not the one who started this.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then the speaker.
The final sentence came through.
“The truth about Elena’s disappearance is buried with the person who ordered it.””
The recording stopped.
Andre looked at Marcus.
And for the first time, fear appeared on his face.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
May you like
Andre whispered:
“Your father’s grave was opened three days ago.””
