Chapter 4: The Name Hidden Under the Ink
Marcus stared at the second message beneath the photograph.
The dining room had never felt so small.
The chandelier still burned brightly above them. The crystal glasses still sat untouched on the table. The expensive wine still reflected the golden light.
Everything looked perfect.
But Marcus knew better now.
Perfect was the easiest thing to fake.
His fingers tightened around the old photograph.
“What does it say?”” Renee asked.
Marcus did not answer.
Vanessa watched him carefully.
Too carefully.
“Marcus,” she said softly.
“Give it to me.””
He looked at her.
A woman who had shared his bed.
A woman who had held him when Elena disappeared.
A woman who had whispered that everything would be okay.
And suddenly, he wondered how many of those moments had been real.
“No,” he said.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re letting strangers manipulate you.””
Marcus unfolded the hidden paper.
The handwriting was faded, but clear.
It was Elena’s.
Only four words were written.
*“Trust Nia’s mother.””*
Marcus looked up.
Everyone went silent.
Nia froze.
“My mother?””
Renee slowly nodded.
“I knew it.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Renee looked at the floor.
“Elena told me she left another clue.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know who to trust.””
The answer made Marcus angry.
“You could have trusted me.””
Renee looked at him sadly.
“Could I?””
The question hurt because Marcus did not know how to answer.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at her.
She laughed nervously.
“You’re all standing in my dining room, accusing me because of a necklace and a piece of paper?””
Nia’s voice was quiet.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at her.
Nia pointed at the photograph.
“We’re asking questions because Elena knew something would happen.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you know Elena?””
Nia held her gaze.
“My mother did.””
The room shifted.
Marcus noticed something.
Every time Elena’s name came up, Vanessa reacted.
Not with sadness.
Not with grief.
With fear.
“Tell me about your mother,” Marcus said.
Nia looked at him.
“My mother’s name was Claire Brooks.””
Marcus frowned.
“I don’t remember that name.””
“You wouldn’t.””
The words were gentle.
But they carried pain.
“She wasn’t someone important to people like you.””
Marcus looked away.
Nia continued.
“She cleaned houses. Took care of children. Worked three jobs. But Elena treated her like a person.””
Marcus swallowed.
“That sounds like Elena.””
A small smile appeared on Nia’s face.
“It was.””
For the first time that night, Nia looked less like someone seeking revenge.
She looked like someone protecting a memory.
“My mother said Elena was the kind of person who noticed everyone.””
Nia touched the photograph.
“She noticed when my mother was struggling. She helped her pay medical bills. She made sure my little brother had a place to go after school.””
Marcus listened.
Every word sounded like Elena.
Every word reminded him of what he lost.
“Then why didn’t Claire come to me?”” he asked.
Nia looked at Vanessa.
“Because she was scared.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“Of what?””
Nia turned.
“Of you.””
The accusation hung in the air.
Vanessa smiled.
A dangerous smile.
“Careful.””
Nia did not move.
“My mother told me Elena discovered something.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“What?””
Nia hesitated.
Then:
“She found out someone had been moving money from your family accounts.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“That’s impossible.””
Renee looked at him.
“Is it?””
Marcus turned.
“What do you mean?””
Renee opened the folder again.
“Before Elena disappeared, she asked me to investigate financial records.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But Marcus saw it.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Marcus, don’t.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Did you know?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
Marcus stepped back.
“I trusted you.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“And I loved you.””
“Did you?””
The question cut deeper than shouting.
Vanessa became still.
Then she whispered:
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family.””
Nia noticed something.
Vanessa was not denying anything.
She was changing the story.
Renee placed a document on the table.
“Marcus, you need to see this.””
He picked it up.
It was a bank transfer.
A large amount of money.
The destination account was hidden.
But the signature at the bottom was visible.
Marcus’s face drained of color.
Because the signature belonged to him.
“No.””
Renee watched him.
“Someone used your name.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Who had access to my accounts?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa answered.
“You did.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“You gave me access.””
The room froze.
She stepped closer.
“You trusted me. You made me your wife. You gave me everything.””
Marcus whispered:
“So you admit it?””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Not guilt.
Anger.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Elena was never innocent.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Vanessa looked toward the necklace.
“She knew too much.””
A cold silence followed.
Nia whispered:
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at her.
And for the first time, there was no pretending.
“You should ask your mother.””
Nia stepped back.
“My mother is dead.””
Vanessa smiled.
“That’s exactly why you should ask her.””
Marcus felt something twist in his chest.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa reached toward the table.
Toward the photograph.
Toward the evidence.
But before she could touch it, the dining room lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the old security system beside the door turned on.
A recording began playing.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
Elena’s voice.
Everyone froze.
“If you are hearing this…”
Marcus stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“…it means Vanessa found the necklace.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
Marcus looked at her.
The recording crackled.
“And it means I was right to be afraid.””
The final words came through the speakers.
“Marcus, if Vanessa is standing beside you…”
A pause.
Then Elena whispered:
“Run.””
The recording ended.
And on the table, Marcus’s phone lit up again.
A new message appeared.
This time from an unknown number.
*“She knows where Elena is.””*
May you like
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa slowly reached for the door.
