Chapter 3: The Call From the Past
The phone continued ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
No one breathed.
Marcus stared at the screen like it was a ghost standing in front of him.
Elena Whitmore.
His first wife.
The woman who vanished.
The woman everyone told him was gone forever.
His hand hovered above the phone.
Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t answer that.””
Marcus looked at her.
The fear in her voice told him more than any confession could.
“Why?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Because it’s a trick.””
Renee stepped closer.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
Renee’s face was pale.
“It’s not.””
Marcus answered.
The entire room held still.
“Hello?””
Static.
Then silence.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Hello?””
A faint breath came through the speaker.
Then a voice.
A woman’s voice.
Older.
Broken.
But unmistakable.
“Marcus.””
His knees nearly gave out.
He gripped the table.
“Elena?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Nia covered her mouth.
Renee whispered:
“She’s alive.””
Marcus could barely speak.
“Where are you?””
The voice on the phone trembled.
“I don’t have much time.””
Marcus walked away from the table.
“No. No, you don’t get to say that. You don’t get to disappear for twelve years and call me like nothing happened.””
A pause.
Then Elena answered:
“I know.””
The pain in those two words destroyed him more than anger could.
Marcus turned away from everyone.
“Why?””
The phone went quiet.
“Why did you leave me?””
Nobody moved.
Then Elena said:
“I didn’t.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The room blurred.
“What do you mean?””
“I never left.””
The words landed like thunder.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Hang up.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
Her face tightened.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice became stronger.
“For twelve years, I listened to you.””
Vanessa froze.
“I listened when you told me she was gone. I listened when you told me to stop searching. I listened when you said I needed to move on.””
He looked at the necklace.
“And now I’m finally listening to the person who was supposed to be gone.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Elena’s voice came through the phone.
“Marcus.””
“Yes?””
“Do you still have the necklace?””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
Marcus slowly answered.
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then Elena said:
“It was never supposed to be hers.””
Vanessa grabbed the phone.
“No!””
Marcus pulled it away.
“Vanessa!””
For the first time, her control disappeared completely.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Marcus stared at her.
“I don’t think I ever did.””
Nia watched Vanessa carefully.
She noticed something.
Vanessa was not angry because Marcus believed Elena.
She was terrified because Elena was speaking.
Renee opened the folder again.
“There’s more.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
Renee pulled out another photograph.
This one was newer.
Much newer.
Marcus took it.
His heart stopped.
It showed Elena.
Standing outside a building.
Alive.
But that was not what shocked him.
Behind Elena stood someone else.
Someone Marcus recognized.
Someone who had been in his life every single day for twelve years.
He looked up slowly.
“No.””
Renee whispered:
“That’s why Elena hid.””
Marcus stared at the photograph.
“Who took this?””
Renee did not answer.
Vanessa moved toward the table.
“Give me that.””
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice became sharp.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“Tell me the truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“You want the truth?””
Everyone waited.
She laughed softly.
“You couldn’t handle the truth.””
Nia stepped forward.
“You should have thought about that before hurting people.””
Vanessa turned.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
Nia held her gaze.
“I know enough.””
Marcus looked at Nia.
“What did Elena tell your mother?””
Nia looked down.
For years, she had carried the answer.
A secret that had shaped her entire life.
“My mother told me Elena trusted her because she had no one else.””
Marcus waited.
“And?””
Nia swallowed.
“She told my mother that if anything happened…”
She looked at Vanessa.
“…the person responsible would be someone Marcus loved.””
The silence was unbearable.
Vanessa’s face went completely still.
Then she smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“You all think you’ve figured everything out.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at the old photograph.
Then at the necklace.
Then at Nia.
“You have no idea what Elena was capable of.””
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Don’t talk about her like that.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Ask yourself one question.””
“What?””
“Why did Elena leave that message…”
She pointed at Nia.
“…and why did she send a stranger to expose me instead of coming back herself?””
Nobody answered.
Because it was the question everyone had been avoiding.
Marcus looked at the phone.
“Elena?””
Only silence answered.
The call had ended.
Marcus stared at the dead screen.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
From Elena’s number.
One sentence.
Marcus read it.
And his face changed.
Because it said:
“Do not trust the woman wearing my necklace.””
Slowly, Marcus looked up.
At Vanessa.
At the diamond around her neck.
And Vanessa whispered the only word that could explain her panic:
“Marcus…”
But before she could finish, Nia noticed something inside the old photograph.
A hidden fold.
May you like
A second message underneath the first.
And when Marcus opened it, the handwriting revealed a name none of them expected.
