Chapter 9: The Grave That Was Not Empty
Nobody spoke.
The words sat in the room like a weapon.
Your father’s grave was opened three days ago.
Marcus stared at Andre.
“That’s impossible.””
Andre shook his head.
“I saw the report.””
“My father has been dead for fifteen years.””
“I know.””
“Then why would someone open his grave?””
Andre looked at the documents.
“Because someone wanted something.””
Marcus walked away from the desk.
The hidden office suddenly felt suffocating.
Every secret his family had buried was crawling back.
Elena.
His father.
Andre.
Vanessa.
All of them connected.
“What was inside?””
Andre hesitated.
Marcus noticed.
“What was inside?””
Andre looked down.
“The grave was empty.””
The silence was absolute.
Nia stepped back.
“Empty?””
Andre nodded.
“The coffin was there.””
Marcus stared.
“But?””
“But there was no body.””
Renee whispered:
“No.””
Andre looked at her.
“Yes.””
Marcus ran a hand through his hair.
“This makes no sense.””
Andre looked at him.
“It makes perfect sense if our father never died.””
Marcus stopped.
The room went cold.
“No.””
Andre said nothing.
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I was there.””
Andre looked away.
“You were told you were there.””
The sentence hit him.
Marcus remembered the funeral.
The closed casket.
The rushed burial.
The family members who told him not to ask questions.
He remembered Vanessa holding his hand.
He remembered Elena telling him something felt wrong.
A memory surfaced.
A conversation.
Elena saying:
“Marcus, your family hides things behind smiles.””
At the time, he thought she was being suspicious.
Now he wondered if she had been warning him.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Your father is not alive.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was firm.
Too firm.
Marcus noticed.
“How do you know?””
Vanessa froze.
“I just know.””
Andre smiled.
“There it is.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
“The thing she always does.””
Andre looked at Vanessa.
“She knows more than she admits.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re one to talk.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Both stopped.
“I want the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Start with you.””
Her face changed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I spent twelve years defending you.””
Vanessa looked down.
“And I was wrong.””
The words hurt.
But they needed to be said.
“Tell me everything.””
Vanessa sat slowly.
For the first time, she looked defeated.
“When Elena disappeared, she was going to expose your father.””
Marcus listened.
“She found documents proving he had been controlling illegal operations for years.””
Andre nodded.
“She found the accounts.””
Vanessa continued.
“She came to me because she thought I was the only person who could help her.””
Marcus stared.
“But you didn’t.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I tried.””
Nobody believed her.
But she continued.
“I contacted someone who said they could protect her.””
“Who?””
Her voice dropped.
“David.””
The room changed.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“You sent her to him.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t know?””
“He lied.””
Renee stepped forward.
“And Elena disappeared.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because David showed me something.””
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Proof that your father was alive.””
Everyone froze.
Andre stepped closer.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He showed me a video.””
Marcus stared.
“Of my father?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
The lights in the hidden office suddenly flickered.
Everyone stopped.
A sound came from the computer.
A new video file appeared.
No one touched it.
It opened by itself.
The screen showed a dark room.
A man sitting in a chair.
Older.
But familiar.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Andre whispered:
“No.””
Renee covered her mouth.
Nia stared.
Because the man on the screen was impossible.
Marcus stepped closer.
The man looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Marcus’s hands shook.
His father spoke again.
“I know you have questions.””
A pause.
“But before you ask them…”
The old man leaned closer.
“Ask yourself why Elena never came home.””
Marcus froze.
The video continued.
“Because she didn’t disappear.””
A smile.
“She was hiding from you.””
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
His father’s voice continued.
“And the person who helped her hide…”
The screen glitched.
Everyone leaned forward.
The video cut back.
The final words appeared on the screen before it went black.
*Ask Nia who her father really was.*
Nia froze.
Everyone turned toward her.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
Nia looked afraid.
