Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Locked Door

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But for Marcus, it felt like years.

The emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dim.

Unforgiving.

Everyone stood frozen inside the hidden office.

The mysterious voice was gone.

But the threat remained.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“She found us?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Who?””

Still nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who has been protecting you?””

Vanessa looked away.

That was the answer.

“You know.””

Her silence was louder than words.

Renee moved toward the door.

“We need to get out.””

She checked the lock again.

Nothing.

Nia searched the room.

“There has to be another way.””

Marcus barely heard them.

His entire world had become a collection of impossible questions.

Elena alive.

Vanessa lying.

A stranger controlling events from the shadows.

And now someone who had protected Vanessa for twelve years.

He looked at the folder still in Vanessa’s hand.

“Open it.””

She tightened her grip.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because once you see it, there is no going back.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“There was never a going back.””

Vanessa looked at him.

The anger in her face disappeared.

For a second, she looked like the woman he married.

“I didn’t want this.””

Marcus stared.

“Then what did you want?””

She swallowed.

“I wanted a life where I wasn’t afraid.””

The answer surprised him.

But only for a second.

“Afraid of who?””

Vanessa looked at the locked door.

“The same person you just heard.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

Renee frowned.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“I never met him.””

Silence.

Marcus studied her.

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then how does he know you?””

Vanessa looked at the folder.

“Because he knew Elena first.””

That changed everything.

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa slowly opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Not documents.

Photographs.

The first showed Elena.

The second showed a man.

Marcus looked closer.

His heart dropped.

Because he recognized him.

“No.””

Renee looked over his shoulder.

Her face changed.

“You know him?””

Marcus could barely speak.

“He worked for me.””

Nia looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“David Cross.””

The name felt like a confession.

“He was my financial advisor.””

Renee’s eyes widened.

“The man who handled the company accounts?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“So he was helping you?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“He was helping himself.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

“David found out Elena was investigating him.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why did you protect him?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I didn’t know the truth.””

Nobody believed her.

Not even Marcus.

But then she said something that stopped them.

“He threatened me too.””

The room went silent.

Renee crossed her arms.

“Convenient.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You think I wanted to spend twelve years trapped in someone else’s game?””

Marcus watched her.

He hated that part of him still wanted to believe her.

But trust was already broken.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me.””

Marcus whispered:

“You were right.””

A tear appeared in her eye.

But she wiped it away quickly.

Vanessa Whitmore did not let people see weakness.

Not even now.

Suddenly, a small sound came from the computer on the desk.

A notification.

Everyone turned.

The screen turned on by itself.

A video file appeared.

Created today.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who sent that?””

Nobody answered.

He clicked play.

The screen showed Elena.

Alive.

Older.

Sitting somewhere unknown.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus.””

His eyes filled.

After twelve years, seeing her face was almost too much.

“I know you found the room.””

She paused.

“I know Vanessa is with you.””

Vanessa looked away.

Elena continued.

“Before you make any decisions, you need to know the truth.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“What truth?””

The video continued.

“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to leave you.””

A tear fell down Marcus’s face.

“I disappeared because someone tried to kill me.””

Nobody spoke.

Elena looked frightened.

“And the person who ordered it…”

The video froze.

Everyone stared.

Then the screen glitched.

A new message appeared.

*VIDEO INTERRUPTED*

Marcus hit the keyboard.

“No.””

The message disappeared.

Then another file appeared.

A single audio recording.

Named:

*FOR MARCUS ONLY*

Marcus clicked.

A voice played.

But it was not Elena’s.

It was David’s.

“Marcus, if you’re hearing this, it means Vanessa failed.””

Vanessa went pale.

The recording continued.

“And it means Elena finally found a way to reach you.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

David’s voice continued:

“You have spent twelve years believing the wrong person was your enemy.””

A pause.

Then:

“Your first wife didn’t betray you.””

Marcus leaned toward the speaker.

“Then who did?””

David answered.

And the room went silent.

“Your family.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

“What?””

She stared at the folder.

At the photographs.

At the truth waiting inside.

“You need to see the last picture.””

Marcus opened the folder.

Inside was one final photograph.

A photograph taken the night Elena disappeared.

Marcus looked at it.

And his blood ran cold.

May you like

Because standing beside Elena that night…

Was someone Marcus had trusted his entire life.
