Chapter 7: The Face in the Photograph

Marcus stared at the photograph.

For several seconds, his mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.

The image was old.

The edges were worn.

The colors had faded.

But there was no mistaking the person standing beside Elena.

His own brother.

Andre Whitmore.

Marcus slowly lowered the picture.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

Renee looked at him.

“Marcus?””

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Nia stepped closer.

“Who is he?””

Marcus did not answer immediately.

He stared at the photograph again.

Andre was younger in the picture. His smile was relaxed. His hand rested on Elena’s shoulder like they were close.

Too close.

“He’s my brother.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa looked away.

And Marcus noticed.

“You knew.””

Her eyes lifted.

“Marcus…”

“You knew.””

The accusation was quieter this time.

But more painful.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I knew Andre was involved.””

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

“Involved in what?””

She did not answer.

“Vanessa.””

His voice shook.

“Involved in what?””

She looked at the photograph.

“The night Elena disappeared.””

Renee stepped forward.

“You were there?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“No.””

A pause.

“But I know who was.””

Marcus walked toward her.

Every step felt heavier.

“My brother?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer destroyed something inside him.

Marcus leaned against the desk.

Andre.

The person who had stood beside him at every family event.

The person who called Elena “sister.””

The person who hugged him after Elena vanished.

The person who told him to stop searching.

“No,” Marcus whispered.

Nia watched him carefully.

“Why would your brother hurt Elena?””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“I don’t know.””

Renee picked up the image.

“Maybe because Elena found out what he was doing.””

Marcus turned.

“What do you mean?””

Renee opened the folder.

Inside were more documents.

Financial records.

Transfer reports.

Names.

She placed one paper on the desk.

“David wasn’t working alone.””

Marcus looked down.

At the bottom of the document was a company signature.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not David’s.

Andre Whitmore.

Marcus stared.

“My brother.””

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“He was using your company.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And you knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected my brother was stealing from me and you said nothing?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You think I had a choice?””

Marcus laughed.

A painful sound.

“You always have a choice.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Do you know what happened when I confronted him?””

Nobody spoke.

“He told me Elena wasn’t the first person he had silenced.””

The room became colder.

Nia’s face changed.

“Silenced?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He told me people who got in his way disappeared.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And you still stayed?””

The question hurt her.

“I was trying to survive.””

Renee shook her head.

“Survival doesn’t excuse protecting a monster.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You don’t know what fear feels like.””

Nia answered quietly.

“I do.””

Everyone looked at her.

Nia touched the old photograph.

“My mother lived with it.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What happened to your mother?””

Nia hesitated.

Then:

“After Elena disappeared, my mother kept searching.””

The room became still.

“She believed Elena was alive.””

Marcus listened.

“She started collecting evidence. She wrote down names. Dates. Conversations.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“She told me never to trust anyone who suddenly became powerful after someone disappeared.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Marcus noticed.

“Your mother knew about Vanessa?””

Nia nodded.

“She suspected.””

“Why didn’t she come to me?””

Nia looked down.

“Because she tried.””

The words hit him.

“What?””

“My mother went to your office.””

Marcus froze.

“When?””

“The week before she died.””

Silence.

Marcus stared.

“My mother never met your mother.””

Nia looked at him.

“She did.””

The statement broke something open.

“She told me Elena gave her a message for you.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What message?””

Nia reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Older than the one before.

Marcus stared.

“You had that this whole time?””

Nia nodded.

“My mother told me not to open it unless I found you.””

“And you waited?””

“I didn’t know if you were part of it.””

Marcus understood.

After everything, he understood.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Elena’s handwriting.

Again.

*Marcus,*

*If you are reading this, I failed to protect you from the people closest to you.*

Marcus’s hands trembled.

He continued reading.

*Do not believe the story they tell you about that night. I did not run. I was taken.*

His breathing changed.

The next line was underlined.

*The person who helped them get to me was someone I trusted.*

Marcus looked up.

Everyone was silent.

He kept reading.

Then his eyes stopped.

Because the final sentence was not about Andre.

It was not about David.

It was about someone else.

*And Marcus… I’m sorry. The person who betrayed me is the person you loved most before Vanessa.*

He looked up slowly.

Renee’s face had gone pale.

Nia looked confused.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

“Why?””

She looked at the note.

“Because Elena didn’t trust anyone before me.””

The words hung there.

Marcus looked at the note again.

Someone he loved before Vanessa.

Someone from before the marriage.

Someone from before Elena disappeared.

And suddenly, another memory surfaced.

A memory he had buried.

A woman who had been part of his life long before Vanessa.

A woman Elena knew.

Marcus whispered her name.

“Claire.””

Nia froze.

“My mother?””

Before anyone could speak, the office door suddenly unlocked.

A slow click echoed through the room.

Everyone turned.

May you like

The door opened.

And standing outside was Andre Whitmore.
