Chapter 15 - ELAINE’S FIRST APOLOGY WASN’T GOOD ENOUGHSix months after leaving the estate, Elaine wrote Emma a letter.

It began:

I’m sorry you were frightened.

No.

We rejected it.

The problem was not Emma’s emotional reaction.

The problem was Elaine’s choice.

The second version:

I was angry about things your grandfather did, and I took that anger out on you.

Better.

Then:

I locked you in the shed because I wanted to punish you for money you did not ask for and did not understand.

Good.

Finally:

I told myself I was teaching you humility. I was actually humiliating you.

That was accountability.

Emma was not ready to read it.
