Chapter 7 - EMMA WAS CONNECTED TO JOSEPH BELL TOOThen came the strangest part.

Why Emma specifically?

Not merely because Richard wanted to skip Elaine.

Richard’s trust amendment created a charitable and family stewardship structure tied to Joseph Bell’s descendants.

Emma happened to be both.

Through me.

I stared at Samuel.

“What?”

My grandmother’s maiden name was Bell.

I knew that.

I had never connected it.

Samuel had.

Richard had.

My grandmother, Ruth Bell Carter, was Joseph Bell’s niece.

That meant my family carried the Bell line too.

Not that it made Emma more deserving.

But legally, Richard used that connection as part of the revised family stewardship plan.

He wanted the future trust to include descendants from both branches of the family history:

The Bennetts who expanded the business.

And the Bells whose original assets had been erased from the public story.

Emma represented both through marriage and descent.

Lucas stared at me.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Not even remotely.

Elaine apparently found out.

And that intensified her hatred.

In her mind, I was not merely the daughter-in-law who “stole” the estate.

My family represented the history she wanted buried.
