Chapter 25 - THE TABLEOn Emma’s twelfth birthday, we held a small family dinner at the estate.

The house felt different.

Less like a monument.

More like a home.

Paige came.

Several cousins.

Some Bell relatives.

Elaine did not.

Emma’s choice.

We ate around the old dining table.

The same table where Elaine had once complained Emma was “too spoiled” because Richard let her sit beside him.

Halfway through dinner, Emma spilled juice.

Lucas laughed.

“No trust distribution for you.”

She rolled her eyes.

“Good. I don’t know what that means.”

Everyone laughed.

Money had become boring.

Exactly what we wanted.

Then Emma asked Denise Bell:

“Can you tell the warehouse story again?”

Denise did.

Not the trust story.

Not inheritance.

The story about Joseph refusing to close during a snowstorm because workers needed their paychecks before Christmas.

That became the family story Emma liked best.

May you like

Good.

Legacy finally meant character instead of title.
