Chapter 29 - EMMA ASKED WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF SHE HADN’T INHERITED ANYTHINGShe was sixteen.

We were in the garden.

The old shed location was covered in strawberry plants.

She asked:

“If Grandpa left me nothing, would Elaine still have locked me in there?”

I thought.

“Probably not for that reason.”

“Would it be less wrong?”

“No.”

She nodded.

That question mattered.

Because I never wanted Emma to believe the dramatic reveal justified our anger.

She deserved protection before anyone knew the trust existed.

She would have deserved it with zero dollars.

No title.

No Bell ancestry.

No inheritance.

The fortune never made her more worthy.

It merely exposed what Elaine was willing to do when she felt power slipping away.
