Chapter 19 - ELAINE FINALLY SAID THE WORDSTwo years passed before Emma wanted a supervised meeting.

She was eight.
Elaine looked older.
Smaller somehow.
She sat across from Emma.
Then said:
“I was cruel to you.”
No excuses.
Emma watched.
“I locked you in a dark shed.”
“Yes.”
“I told myself you had taken something from me.”
Emma frowned.
“I didn’t.”
“No.”
Elaine started crying.
“You didn’t.”
Then:
“The money was never yours because you stole it.”
Emma looked confused.
Elaine corrected herself.
“It was put in trust for you. You didn’t ask.”
“Okay.”
Then Emma asked:
“Are you mad I have it?”
Elaine thought.
“I’m ashamed that I was.”
That was the right answer.
No hug.
May you like
No instant reunion.
But something shifted.
