Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE THAT WAS NEVER THEIRSLucas read the line again.

“It never belonged to us?”

Samuel nodded.

Elaine said:

“Stop.”

Lucas ignored her.

He kept reading.

The estate came through Margaret Vale, your grandmother. It was placed in a protected family trust before I married Elaine.

Margaret Vale.

Lucas’s grandmother on his father’s side.

The woman who had built the original real-estate fortune.

I knew the family story.

Or thought I did.

Everyone always said Richard Bennett inherited the estate and expanded it.

Apparently that wasn’t accurate.

The house, surrounding land, and several investment properties had remained inside a trust created by Margaret.

Richard only had lifetime control.

He did not own them outright.

Lucas looked up.

“So Mom never owned this house?”

Samuel answered carefully.

“She had residential rights as Richard’s spouse.”

Elaine snapped:

“I have lived here for thirty-five years.”

“That doesn’t change title.”

She looked furious.

Lucas continued reading.

Your mother has always believed marriage made her co-owner of everything I controlled. Legally, it did not.

Elaine turned away.

My daughter whispered:

“Mommy, can we go inside?”

“Yes.”

I carried her toward the house.

But Lucas stopped me gently.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“Take her upstairs. Please.”

I knew he needed to keep reading.

I also knew Emma didn’t need to hear adults argue over millions while still shaking from being locked in a shed.

So I took her away.

That was the first good decision anyone made that afternoon.
