Chapter 8 - ELAINE CALLED IT REVISIONIST NONSENSEWhen Lucas confronted her, she exploded.

“Your father became obsessed with guilt.”
“About what?”
“Things that happened before he was born.”
Lucas held up the records.
“Joseph Bell founded the company.”
“No.”
“His deed bought the first warehouse.”
“Margaret ran it.”
“After he died.”
Elaine rolled her eyes.
“Ancient history.”
That phrase told me everything.
History becomes “ancient” when truth is inconvenient.
Then she looked at me.
“Your family had nothing to do with this.”
I almost laughed.
Neither did she, legally.
But I didn’t say that.
Instead:
“This isn’t about me.”
“It became about you the moment Richard found your grandmother.”
“No.”
I looked at her.
May you like
“It became about Emma when you locked a six-year-old in the dark because you were angry at documents.”
She had no answer.
