Chapter 10: The Choice He Never Told Me About

The silence after Vanessa’s words was louder than any argument we had ever had.

My father stood completely still.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Just frozen.

Like someone had opened a door he had spent years keeping locked.

I looked at Marcus.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who held my hand when I was scared of thunderstorms.

The man who told me I could trust him.

And suddenly I wondered how many times he had looked me in the eyes while hiding something that changed everything.

“Dad?””

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

This time, louder.

Marcus looked at me.

And the pain on his face told me the truth before his words did.

“There’s something you don’t know.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe we were still saying that.

“Of course there is.””

Vanessa looked down.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I wiped my cheek.

“Just tell me.””

He nodded slowly.

“I made a decision after your mother left.””

“What decision?””

He looked at the phone.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at me.

“A decision about custody.””

The word felt cold.

Official.

Like I was a piece of paperwork instead of a person.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus swallowed.

“It means your mother wanted to take you with her.””

I already knew.

But hearing it again hurt.

“And you stopped her.””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

I looked away.

“Why?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Because I was angry.””

Nobody moved.

“I thought she was abandoning us.””

My chest tightened.

“She was leaving me.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She was leaving the situation.””

I stared at him.

“What situation?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“The situation I created.””

Everyone turned.

Even Marcus.

Vanessa stood there with tears in her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

The words sounded strange coming from her.

A woman who never apologized.

A woman who always had a reason.

“I thought if Marcus saw me as the person who held everything together, he would never leave.””

She looked at me.

“And your mother was the only person who could expose what I had done.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“So you pushed her away.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“But there’s more.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What more?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“The night your mother left…”

Her voice shook.

“I told her something.””

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I told her Marcus had chosen me.””

My father’s face changed.

Because he remembered.

“You told her that?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I wanted her to give up.””

The room felt smaller.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

“About what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“About the custody papers.””

Marcus went pale.

“What?””

I looked between them.

“What papers?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“I told your mother you had already signed an agreement that she couldn’t take Maya.””

My heart stopped.

“But you hadn’t?””

Marcus whispered.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I forged the impression that everything was already decided.””

Nobody spoke.

I stared at her.

“You made my mother think she lost me.””

Vanessa cried silently.

“Yes.””

The answer was barely audible.

“And she left because she thought she had no choice.””

Marcus turned away.

His hand pressed against the counter.

I had never seen him look so broken.

“My God.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was scared.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were selfish.””

She didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

For the first time, she knew.

I looked at the photo again.

My mother standing beside me.

Vanessa in the background.

Crying.

“Why did you keep this picture?””

Vanessa looked at it.

“Because I took it.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“That was the last night I saw your mother.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I knew you would hate me.””

The answer was simple.

Honest.

Terrible.

I looked at my father.

“But you still let me believe Mom left.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

A tear fell.

“But every time you protected me, you took something from me.””

The words hurt him.

I could see it.

But I needed him to hear them.

Lily quietly stepped beside me.

“Dad…”

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m sorry, baby.””

She frowned.

“Why are you sorry?””

He looked at both of us.

“Because I should have asked questions.””

The phone buzzed again.

Everyone turned.

Another message.

Marcus picked it up.

This time, the sender name appeared.

Not unknown.

Not hidden.

A name.

My mother.

My heart stopped.

The message read:

*“Maya, if you are seeing this, it means the truth finally came out.””*

Nobody breathed.

Marcus stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another line appeared.

*“But there is one thing your father still doesn’t know.””*
