Chapter 2: The Girl Who Finally Spoke

Before that night, nobody would have believed Lily was the one who would expose Vanessa.

Lily was the quiet one.

The kid who apologized when someone bumped into her.

The kid who hid behind me during arguments.

The kid who still believed every adult had a good reason for everything they did.

But that night, standing in the kitchen with tears on her cheeks, she looked older than eight years old.

Marcus kept holding the phone.

Nobody moved.

The refrigerator hummed in the silence.

The clock above the stove ticked louder than it should have.

Vanessa stared at the phone like it was a weapon.

“Maya,” she said suddenly, turning toward me, “tell your father the truth.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“Tell him what really happened.””

I stared at her.

She was trying to do it again.

She was trying to control the story before anyone heard it.

Marcus looked between us.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No, Marcus. I need you to understand what kind of situation you’re in.””

She pointed at me.

“She has been manipulating everyone.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why would I do that?””

“Because you hate me.””

The words landed harder than the slap.

Because that was what Vanessa always did.

She took pieces of the truth and twisted them until I looked like the problem.

Marcus looked at me.

“Maya, do you hate Vanessa?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I just wanted her to stop.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“Stop what?””

I looked at her.

And for once, I didn’t look away.

“Stop making me feel like I’m crazy.””

The kitchen went silent again.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“See?””

She looked at Marcus.

“She’s dramatic.””

Lily stepped forward.

“She’s telling the truth.””

Vanessa turned.

“Lily.””

“No.””

The little girl’s voice trembled.

But she kept going.

“You always tell Maya nobody will believe her.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What did she mean?””

Vanessa froze.

“I have no idea.””

Lily hugged herself.

“You said Dad would think Maya was lying.””

The color disappeared from Vanessa’s face.

“Maya,” Marcus said quietly, “is that true?””

I looked down.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

“Yes.””

My father closed his eyes for a second.

I could see the pain on his face.

Not because he knew everything.

Because he realized he had missed something.

“Maya, why didn’t you tell me?””

I swallowed.

“Because every time I tried, she already knew what I was going to say.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does,” Lily whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

She walked closer to Marcus.

“I found the phone because Vanessa dropped it.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“What?””

“When you left earlier, she was talking to Maya.””

My heart started racing.

Lily looked at the cracked phone.

“She didn’t know it was recording.””

Marcus looked down at the device.

“Why was it recording?””

I answered quietly.

“Because I was scared.””

My father looked at me.

“I thought if I recorded something, maybe someone would believe me.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“So you were spying on me?””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“I was trying to protect myself.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

For the first time, he wasn’t looking at her like a partner.

He was looking at her like a stranger.

Vanessa noticed.

And that scared her more than anything.

She stepped closer.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

He raised a hand.

“No.””

The word surprised everyone.

Even him.

He looked at the phone.

“I’m listening to this.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“Maybe.””

He unlocked the phone.

“But I need to know.””

Vanessa moved toward him.

“Maya is angry. She doesn’t understand consequences.””

I looked at her.

“You’re still doing it.””

“Doing what?””

“Trying to make me look like the bad person.””

Vanessa smiled.

A cold smile.

“You have no idea what happens when people hear the truth.””

My blood ran cold.

Because she didn’t sound confident.

She sounded like she was warning me.

Marcus pressed his thumb against the screen.

The recording list appeared.

There was only one file.

One recording.

Created at 6:42 p.m.

The exact time Vanessa had entered the kitchen with me.

Lily watched him.

I held my breath.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

And slowly pulled away.

“Why are you scared of a recording if you did nothing wrong?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Not one.

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

Marcus looked back at the phone.

His thumb hovered over the file.

And then the screen showed something that made Vanessa completely lose control.

The recording wasn’t named by time.

It had a title.

A title Vanessa had accidentally created herself.

*“Maya’s confession.””*

Marcus looked up.

“Why would you name it that?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

And for the first time, her voice broke.

“Because you don’t understand what’s on that phone.””

Marcus stared at her.

Then he asked the question nobody expected.

“What exactly did you make my daughter confess to?””

May you like

Vanessa reached for the phone again.

“Marcus, don’t press—”
