Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Never Knew

Marcus didn’t open the second recording immediately.

That was the strange part.

A few hours earlier, he had walked into the kitchen expecting an ordinary evening.

Dinner.

Homework.

A normal family night.

Now he stood there holding a phone full of secrets.

And nobody knew which one would hurt him most.

Vanessa watched him carefully.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

Her voice softened.

The same voice she used whenever she wanted to make people feel guilty.

“Please think before you do something you can’t undo.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what she had done to me.

She had made me afraid of consequences while ignoring her own actions.

Marcus noticed my expression.

“Maya?””

I shook my head.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For thinking you wouldn’t believe me.””

The sentence changed something in his face.

He looked away.

Like those words hurt more than any accusation.

“I should have known.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how to comfort someone who had failed me but was finally admitting it.

Lily looked between us.

“Dad?””

Marcus immediately looked down at her.

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at Maya?””

His expression broke.

“No, baby.””

He knelt beside her.

“I’m not mad at Maya.””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“Are you mad at her?””

Marcus didn’t answer right away.

That silence told us enough.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Marcus stood.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“This is years of things I ignored.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“I have done everything for this family.””

“Have you?””

The question made her stop.

Marcus held up the phone.

“Because I’m starting to wonder if I ever knew you.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

Real hurt.

For a second, I almost felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered the recording.

The slap.

The threats.

The way she looked at me when nobody else was watching.

“I loved you,” Vanessa said.

Marcus stared at her.

“Then why was my daughter afraid of you?””

No answer.

Only silence.

He unlocked the second recording.

Vanessa moved closer.

“Marcus, don’t.””

Again.

That same fear.

That same panic.

Marcus looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

He pressed play.

The recording began.

At first, there was only background noise.

A restaurant.

People talking.

Glasses clinking.

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“You’re really going through with this?””

Marcus froze.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the location.

“When was this?”” he asked.

Vanessa didn’t speak.

The recording continued.

A younger-sounding Marcus answered.

“I have to.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharper.

“You don’t have to tell Maya.””

My blood ran cold.

My father looked at me.

The recording continued.

“She’s just a kid.””

Marcus stopped it.

His hand was shaking.

“What is this?””

Vanessa looked trapped.

“Maya doesn’t need to know about old conversations.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Old conversations about what?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

I had never seen my father look afraid before.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Afraid.

Because he was hearing a conversation that happened before I understood the world.

Before I understood why my mother left.

Before I understood why Vanessa entered our lives so quickly.

Marcus pressed play again.

Vanessa’s voice came through.

“You promised you would never tell her.””

My father whispered:

“No.””

The recording continued.

Marcus’s old voice answered:

“She deserves to know someday.””

Vanessa replied:

“She’ll hate you.””

Marcus looked like someone had punched him.

I stared at him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t look at me.

The recording continued.

“You’re not the only one who made mistakes, Marcus.””

Then a long silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“If Maya finds out what really happened the night her mother left, she’ll never forgive either of us.””

My heart stopped.

My mother.

A name nobody mentioned anymore.

A wound in our family that had never fully closed.

Marcus suddenly stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Lily looked confused.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does she mean?””

Vanessa’s eyes met mine.

And something in her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Regret.

“Maya…”

My father finally looked at me.

His face was filled with pain.

And I knew.

Whatever happened years ago…

Whatever secret they had buried…

It was connected to me.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“What happened to Mom?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, Vanessa interrupted.

“She left because—”

Marcus turned sharply.

“Don’t.””

One word.

A warning.

Vanessa stopped.

And that told me everything.

Because whatever the truth was…

She knew it.

May you like

Marcus knew it.

And they had both been keeping it from me.
