Chapter 12: The Letter That Changed Everything
Marcus opened the letter.
The screen was small, but every word felt enormous.
My mother’s handwriting.
Her thoughts.
Her voice.
A piece of her that had survived all these years.
I moved closer.
Lily stood beside me.
Even Vanessa didn’t move.
Nobody wanted to miss a single word.
Marcus began reading aloud.
“Dear Maya…”
His voice cracked.
He stopped.
Then continued.
“By the time you read this, I hope you know one thing before anything else.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother loved you.””
I covered my mouth.
The sentence was simple.
But I had waited years to hear it.
Marcus continued.
“I never wanted to leave you. I never stopped fighting for you.””
His voice became quieter.
“The night I left, I believed your father had made a choice. I believed he wanted a life without me.””
Marcus looked away.
I saw the guilt on his face.
The letter continued.
“But years later, I learned the truth.””
Everyone froze.
“What truth?”” Marcus whispered.
He kept reading.
“I learned Marcus never saw the messages I sent. I learned the letters never reached him.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The room changed.
Because now it wasn’t just a confession.
It was proof.
My mother had been trying.
She had been fighting.
And we had all lived inside a lie.
The letter continued.
“I also learned someone else was helping hide the truth.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She looked down.
My hands shook.
“Mom knew?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“She knew.””
He kept reading.
“I don’t blame you, Maya. You were a child. You trusted the adults around you.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“But I need you to know that I never forgot you.””
A sob escaped before I could stop it.
Lily hugged my arm.
The letter continued.
“I kept one thing hidden because I was afraid it would put you in danger.””
Marcus stopped.
“Danger?””
Vanessa looked nervous.
I looked at him.
He did.
“The night I left, I discovered Vanessa wasn’t only hiding letters.””
The room froze.
“She had been creating a story about me.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa whispered:
“It means she knew.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at me.
“I knew your mother wasn’t the problem.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I knew she was telling the truth.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice broke.
“But fear doesn’t explain everything.””
Vanessa cried.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“It doesn’t.””
Marcus continued reading.
The letter said:
“Vanessa was afraid of losing Marcus. She made terrible choices. But there was another reason she wanted your mother gone.””
My father stopped.
“What reason?””
He looked at me.
Then continued.
“She believed your father would never choose her if he still loved your mother.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus whispered:
“That was it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The letter continued.
“But Maya, there is one more thing you need to know.””
My heartbeat changed.
Because I knew.
This was the part everyone feared.
Marcus read slower.
“The person who sent you this letter is not Daniel.””
He stopped.
Everyone looked confused.
“What?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
“The sender…”
His face changed.
“Maya.””
“What?””
He turned the phone toward me.
The sender information appeared.
My mother’s name wasn’t there.
Daniel’s wasn’t there.
It was another name.
A name I had never seen before.
*Sofia Bennett.*
Vanessa gasped.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know that name.””
She stepped backward.
“I thought she was gone.””
My heart raced.
“Who is Sofia?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Your mother’s sister.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the phone.
“My aunt?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I didn’t know she was involved.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
Because this wasn’t just a family secret anymore.
It was a secret someone had kept alive for years.
The phone buzzed one more time.
A new message appeared.
From Sofia.
May you like
Only one sentence.
*“Maya, I’m sorry I waited this long. But your mother’s final secret is about to come out.””*
